Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2006, Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA reappears this year with more extreme hop flavors than ever before. The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer. Several pounds of Centennial & Cascade hops are in each barrel with a heavy dry-hop presence to top it off. A blend of crystal, pale and caraston malts creates an overall biscuity characteristic that is dense and muscular, building the alcohol base to support the monstrous hop profile. 95 IBUs.

Bottle, GABF after party. Bright orange with a small head. Aroma is wet citrus, especially lemon and tangerine. Flavor is like biting into fresh squeezed juices, with a bitter pith finish. It is a complex sweet-citrus, perhaps even a moment of nectarine in there. Quite satisfying.

This beer pours one finger high. There is are large bubbles and a lot of lace left by the beer. The aroma is very floral, almost a fresh pine smell. To me it’s very much akin to fresh oranges, sweet and piney. The appearance is slightly hazey, probably due to a cold haze in my glass. It’s a reddish copper color with a lot of carbonation happening. The first taste I get a mild malt character overwhelmed by a piney character. I also get a strong citrus taste in my second taste of the beer. It does leave a bitter after taste. Overall, I was impressed with this beer. For the ABV, I don’t get any hints of the alcohol. The hop character covers all of that up pretty well. If I could find it out my way regularly I would definitely buy this one again.

Version #4, Infused with Fresh Centennials. On-Tap @ the Portland Public House poured into Snifter glass. Pours a cloudy orange with a creamy white head that is long lasting before creating a nice crown of foam atop the glass and leaves nice lacing down the glass. The aroma is citrus hops and citrus hops in their freshest form. Wow. The flavor is more of that citrus goodness and is zesty and bitter with a semi-dry finish. The body is full and mildly carbonated. This is some potent stuff. I really feel that their should be separate ratings for each of the versions since the hop characters of each are different and meld differently with the malts and have highly variable ABV’s. This is certainly my favorite version and is highly drinkable.

Drank it with rcasta and ghawener. I thought I had tried it before, but guess not...Wow, this is what I love in a beer. Medium bodied, full flavored, nice mouthfeel throughout.

Draught at Deschutes Brewery and Public House in Portland. Version #4, infused with fresh Centennial hops. Hugely fragant and floral, with big hops all the way through. Aroma mainly, though, and very light bitterness. Big citrus flavor, with a retrained bitter finish. Excellent.

22oz - Aroma of chewy pine resin hops and caramel. Add in some floral hops as well. Flavor is very well balanced of strong malts and hops. Palate is creamy and tart. A very tasty DIPA.

Had this on tap last night at the Deschutes in the Pearl Dist. in Portland, OR. Colour... amber-gold with a 1/4" off-white head. Nose... resinous, grapefruit skin, zest and pith. Palate... nice C02, coating and somewhat cloying with loads of citrusy hops and pine pitch, some biscuit character, nice mix of malts for balance, hop bite from front to back and down the gullet, as well. Glorious stuff!
