Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2006, Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA reappears this year with more extreme hop flavors than ever before. The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer. Several pounds of Centennial & Cascade hops are in each barrel with a heavy dry-hop presence to top it off. A blend of crystal, pale and caraston malts creates an overall biscuity characteristic that is dense and muscular, building the alcohol base to support the monstrous hop profile. 95 IBUs.

I had been sitting on this bottle since I purchased a few right when I saw them 4 months or so ago. It pours a nice 1 finger head being served at 50 deg. It has a nice copper color with very active carbonation. I got nutmeg on the nose as well as some medisonal. On tasting it this medisonal smell came out in the flavor after you swallowed almost like a shot of nightquil. I does say experimental, has less malt flavor that I would have expected with the hops it has. I did not feel the hops were blanced though. Another interesting beer from Deschutes worth a try for yourself. I hope my other bottles show better though.

Bomber. Poured healthy medium orange with a short-moderate cap of off-white head. The aroma was rich and juicy.. grapefruit meat rocked it hard, paired with spicy floral and piney hoppage.. sweet caramel backed it up.. well-presented. The flavor had the same sweet caramel at the core with grapefruit, pine, and slightly lesser floral bitterness around.. thankfully just as juicy as the nose.. long bitter finish that never got out of hand. Heavier-bodied on the palate with low-ish carbonation.. a little sweeter than I’d like, but the hops were oh-so-good and made up for it.

22oz bottle 8/12/09 (Coaltrain-Colorado Springs)-A citrus, piney, slight malt aroma comes from this medium to dark amber brew iwth a nice size off white head. Taste is of hops, malt, caramel, and sweetness. This medium bodied brew is very well balanced with a nice dry finish. Enjoy.

(Sample Date: 6/6/2009 Source:Other) RB Richmond Gathering. Piney resiny hop aroma over caramel maltyness. Clear dark golden with small white head. Resiny hop flavor dominates over caramel sweetness with a heafty bitterness. Finish is dry and bitter with a touch of warming.

Bottle thanks to ditmier. Pour is deep hazy copper with medium off-white head. Aroma is big on citrus hops but caramel malt becomes more and more evident as beer warms. Aroma also has some light spiciness and some faint marshmallow. Flavor is very intertwined hop and sweet malt up-front. Neither dominates, but both are very present. Middle is more malty and earthy with the finish being faintly hoppy and occasionally sweet. Tasted like a bigger beer than 8.75. Body is rich and oily yet it drinks well. Like many of the style, I get a lot of barleywine character from this beer. Thanks for the treat!

Bottle (660ml) shared with HogTownHarry, garthicus, GregClow & tupalev -- c/o tupalev. Pours a clear deep amber with an average size somewhat-lasting off-white head. Nice aroma of resiny floral hops along with sweet caramel malt, citrus and spices. Flavour is big time hops along with some alcohol, sweet malt and a very bitter finish. Medium bodied. Interesting and really good!

A nice copper pour with a 1mm white "head". Citrus and floral hop aroma dominate. Flavor is citrus and enough malt balance. Tons of hop flavor and just enough bitterness.

Bomber from sparky27. Pours copper with thick off-white head. Aroma is hoppy with citrus, sweet malt, caramel and some fruit. Flavor is nicely balanced with caramel, sweet malt and hops. Also has good citrus punch and some spices. Nice mouthfeel and carbonatin. Could be great with more hops, but still a nicely balanced IPA.
