Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2006, Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA reappears this year with more extreme hop flavors than ever before. The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer. Several pounds of Centennial & Cascade hops are in each barrel with a heavy dry-hop presence to top it off. A blend of crystal, pale and caraston malts creates an overall biscuity characteristic that is dense and muscular, building the alcohol base to support the monstrous hop profile. 95 IBUs.

Bottle:   Vibrant amber, very bright and very clear, large foamy off-white head, sticky lacing, moderate carbonation.   Juicy hop nose, citrus zest and soft alcohol.   Not terribly malty on the tongue, but otherwise flavorful with the hop and citrus zest.   Very zesty in fact.   Not overly biting, but thats good considering the malts arent that big.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Clean on the exit, soft lingering zest and hops.   This to me seems like a 1.5 IPA and not quite as big as I was hoping.   I was thinking it might be entering Barley Wine territory, but nope.   Regardless, still enjoyable.

Bottle, at Chris O’s Pre-GBBF tasting, 1st Aug 09. This was one of my contributions to the tasting, having been bought in SF in February. Tons of fresh hops on the nose but in the mouth it is very well balanced. The palate is full but not too heavy and the alcohol warms the mouth nicely.

bomber - pours clear dark orange with thin white head along the edges; fruity, sweet hop aromas; oranges, sticky; texture is thin and slightly bitter; rich, fresh and nice level of bitterness/dryness; nose works but flavor on the bland side; interesting IIPA though

Cracked after a long beer festival day and not sure if it was the setting or the beer but this blew everything out of the water I had drunk earlier. The hop profile is so diverse and evolves throughout the drink you just can’t put it down long enough to savor it. Aroma is floral and herbal. Flavor is mostly fruit up front, citrus and apple. The finish you get some sticky pine and grapefruit bitterness. Runs the gamut of hop profiles and experiences here. All of it working with a nice caramel malt body in the background. Phenomenal.

Draught. Poured orange with thick white head much lacing. Powerful hop aroma with citrus, especially tangerine and sweet orange. Big hop flavour, when they call this a hop bomb, they are serious. Lasting hop flavour. This was almost too hoppy.

Bottle: Pours a hazy orange color with a big white head. The nose is sappy with lots of citrus fruits: pumelo, yuzu, mandarin. Fun stuff. The flavor has a bit of sweet malts to counter all this citrus delights, and it works for the most part. Very fresh and fragrant with a hopiness level that doesn’t happen that often without the bitterness. Nice!
