jumpjet2k (135), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 4, 2009 2009 bottle. I like the art this time around - simple, pretty, and definitely wintry. Pours a medium hazy brown in color, with a nice off-tan head which sits nicely for a while. Fairly clean nose, a little fruity, a little spicy, a little crystal malty. Flavor takes a little while to settle in on my taste buds. There’s a pleasant medium-sweet malt note underlying everything. Atop of this are spice notes and some lightly piny hops. Not bad, overall. angrypirate06 (678), Texas, USA Nov 4, 2009 Pours a dark ruby brown color with a tan foamy head. Aroma is raisin, dark fruits, caramel. Flavor is smoky, dark fruits, ash, caramel, bitter. Creamy mouthfeel. jrob21 (1249), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 3, 2009 Pours murky brownish red with a decent and lasting offwhite head. A little bit of roasty malt and caramel sweetness aroma. Flavor is cocoa and caramel again but faint. Creamy texture and a slightly bitter pine sort of finish. A little bit of spice going on here but everything is just a little too faint for my liking. Kick it up a notch emeril. Bitzybrew (26), New York, New York, USA Oct 31, 2009 Not as spicy as I’d like in a winter warmer, but definitely great. A nice amount of chocolate and cocoa, some spice and hop bitterness in the the aftertaste. Some vinous fruitiness of grape, plum, and cherry. Nena (116), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 27, 2009 Updated: Oct 28, 2009Bottle of the 2009 batch. I bought this last year and disliked it, but recently my dad tried it and found this year’s batch better. So, I’m giving it another go. Pours a dark brown with a moderately large foamy head. Toffee and alcohol are present on the aroma. Flavor is caramel, nutty, and a spicy, warming bitter finish. This fits the description "winter warmer" more than most. I’m happy to say it won me over this time. noncaloric (601), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Oct 21, 2009 Thanks to riversideAK. Clear mahogany pour, thin beige head, temporary lace. Aroma of alcohol, mint, gumball. Flavor similarly leads with penetrating fruity/spicy elements, gumball, peppermint, wintergreen, overlaying a toasted malt profile, some caramel and bread. Any sweetness is cut by hops bitterness and a generally tea-like, resinous quality. Medium to full body, decidedly warming. brenn79 (140), Idaho, USA Oct 20, 2009 12 oz. bottle- Pours like a nut brown, dark brown with a tan head, tastes similar to a barleywine only more mild and nutty. Better than I remembered, I dont think Deschutes brews a bad beer. notalush (2626), Denver, Colorado, USA Oct 18, 2009 Clear ruby pour, minimal lacing - super malty aroma, with notes of caramel, toffee, sponge pudding/treacle, roast, caramelized sugars - a lot more bitter and roasty up front than the aroma suggests, with some dry spiciness - however, the maltiness comes on strong quickly - nutty character, toffee, chocolate pudding - a bit of fruity character - leafy bitterness comes back for the finish, as the beer gets a bit spicy and warming - a decent american made version of the style, but I’m still reaching for Old Jubilation.
