That said, it seems like every year it’s less robust than I remember the year before. Maybe I’m projecting memories of holiday cheer into the beer, but it never seems to live up to what I remember. Nonetheless, it’s a wonderful quaff that fills my whole mouth with flavor. trokini (1027), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 21, 2007 Pours deep mahogany with brown hioghlights and a thin tan head. Nutty, roasted malt aroma, with a bit of spice (nutmeg? cinnamon?). Flat mouthfeel. A truckload of caramel malt lingers throughout, which the hops have the fight through. Some coffee and roasted malt. It really keeps true to a English Strong Ale without falling into the ESB category. junon (221), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 19, 2007 Deep and solid amber/ruby red. Candy or Fruity presence in aroma. At an alcohol % lower than 7% I am surprised and confused about how prevalent it is through out. Wish they would mask it just a little more. hopdog (5606), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Aromas of caramel, toasted malts, and some dark fruits. Tastes of toasted caramels, lighter dark fruits, and nuts.6 drfabulous (1254), Columbia, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 11, 2007 Much better than other "winter warmers" I’ve had this year. Strong malt taste. Hops. When English "strong ales" are rich in flavor like American strong ales (but without the heavy taste), then we get something like this one. A very good beer. alaskanwarren (286), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 11, 2007 Pours mahogany with a great looking tan head. Aroma is caramel, malt, hint of toastiness, plum and mild spiciness. Flavor is sweet, decent amount of fruits and malt, giving way to more hints of bitter and spice. It’s pretty well balanced for a winter ale. It’s not crazy, radical or shocking. It’s just a great winter ale. I’d definitely purchase this again. Kevin (1918), Colorado, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 30, 2007 Pours almost as dark as a porter with a 2-finger tan head. Slight lacing. Smells of malt, caramel, alcohol and maybe a hint of stone fruit. Flavor is coffee, caramel, then a hoppy dry finish. Nice medium-full body with soft carbonation. Best winter ale this side of Grand Carolus Noel that I’ve tried
