Bottle, courtesy Retorp. Clear, dark copper autumn pour, with a fizzy bubbly white head and a ring of lacing on the glass. Nose has dark fruits, caramel, banana and some spices. Flavor has sticky sweet malts, a slight alcoholic burn, some dry grain and wheat, too. Full-bodied, feels young but is still very drinkable.

09 Reserve bottle. Pours a clear chesnut color, fizzy caramel colored head, quickly dissipates. Sweet fruit, plums, caramel malt, oak, pears, candy sugar, and bitter hops. Quite hot, warming alcohol comign through. Good, probably could use some age on it.

Poured from a waxed bottle. Copper red color with a medium off white head. Sweet aromas of caramel, and oakiness. Very smooth on your palate. Good solid flavors of light bitter hops, sweet warm fruity malt. Alcohol well hidden. Finish is sweet and bitter. Pretty tasty classic style of barley wine.

Bottle from Hi-Times in Costa Mesa. Thankfully, they had several of these bottles on my latest trip there. It’s easily one of the better barleywines I’ve enjoyed recently, and enjoying it while the Magic take one more away from the Cavs was even better.

The beer pours out a clear dark amber color, beautiful in my Maudite glass, with a smallish 1" creamy off-white head. Stunning aromas of dark fruits, deep caramel/maple like notes, floral, oak and a bit of alcohol. Very strong. Flavor bounces around with notes of caramel dipped apples, vanilla, toasted malts, generous hops, and alcohol. An assertive barleywine that Deschutes nails head on. Outstanding.

Draft at Callahans. Pours a bright red to amber hue, head mostly dissipates, excellent clarity. Nose is light fruits, rich sweet malts, light spices and hops. Flavor is thick malts, alcohol warmth, pears and apples, light vanilla and oaky tones, finishes sweet. Full-bodied, thick texture, moderate carbonation. A rich and fruity barleywine, the alcohol presence detracts from overall drinkability.
