| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 27, 2009 Bottle from Hi-Times in Costa Mesa. Thankfully, they had several of these bottles on my latest trip there. It’s easily one of the better barleywines I’ve enjoyed recently, and enjoying it while the Magic take one more away from the Cavs was even better.
The beer pours out a clear dark amber color, beautiful in my Maudite glass, with a smallish 1" creamy off-white head. Stunning aromas of dark fruits, deep caramel/maple like notes, floral, oak and a bit of alcohol. Very strong. Flavor bounces around with notes of caramel dipped apples, vanilla, toasted malts, generous hops, and alcohol. An assertive barleywine that Deschutes nails head on. Outstanding. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 26, 2009 Draft at Callahans. Pours a bright red to amber hue, head mostly dissipates, excellent clarity. Nose is light fruits, rich sweet malts, light spices and hops. Flavor is thick malts, alcohol warmth, pears and apples, light vanilla and oaky tones, finishes sweet. Full-bodied, thick texture, moderate carbonation. A rich and fruity barleywine, the alcohol presence detracts from overall drinkability.
