Smells of some hops lil bit of caramel and some alcohol. Taste is a good amount of hops with a huge alcohol finish. Not a bad alcohol finish but you can definitely taste it. A good beer for sure that started the day off right nowlets get smashed man douglas88 (1675), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 10, 2009 22oz bottle thanks to Sparky27. Wax dipped with the usual awesome label for Deschutes. Pours a ruby hue with a small white head. The aroma is lots of oak barrel, some sweet caramel and fruits, sweet and nice. The flavor is similar; sweet barrel aged goodness. caramel, sweet candies, vanilla, grapes, light bitter hops in the finish struggle to get through. Very nice. The different oak barrels really show here, sweet flavors and a touch of bourbon. bhensonb (4374), Woodland, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 9, 2009 Bottle from the Coop in Davis, CA. Pours a brilliant reddish copper with a stiff tan/beige head. Aromas of sweet caramel and piney hop. Medium body with fine, frothy carbonation. Flavor is caramel with a lot of floral and resin. There’s some heat. Finishes sweet, but with bitter. There’s lots of everything in this wonderful ale. It keeps changing with each sip. wetherel (1641), Encinitas, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 9, 2009 Taste from bottle at PP bottle shop. Very nice. Some sweetness. Lots of carmelization, from either long boil or from barrel. I don’t get much if any buttery barrel aged goodness in the aroma/taste. Very nice medium to strong hoppiness. Very drinkable. Very delicious. arrogantb (715), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 8, 2009 1/2 pint on tap at the Falling Rock for Barleywine month. I had this beer a couple years back but I couldn’t remember if it was good. It is very good. It looks like your standard American barleywine, ruddy orange with a soapy white head. It was also rather opaque. The smell was caramel and sweetness. The flavor was bitter yet smooth with a creamy mouthfeel. i couldn’t taste the barrel or the alcohol. Deschutes needs to whip up another batch of this good stuff!

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 8, 2009 Thanks to toncatcher for this! Pours dark copper with a nice creamy head. Aroma is fruity with some candi sugar, earthy malt and floral. Flavor is sweet with a little of the oak showing. Has some nice hop balance. Medium body and easy to drink. This is good but a different flavor than most of this style. Has more fruit and flowers than most beers but it is not bad. rustychiles (1068), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Pours a nice reddish brown with a decent beige head. Aroma is citrus, hops, caramel, malt, touch of oak. Flavor is citrus, hops, malt, caramel, touch of the oak barrel, touch of dark fruits. Nice oily mouthfeel and well balanced. A tad boozy, but thats what I have grown to expect and love about big beers like this one. Cant wait to see how this ages, I enjoyed it quite a bit. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 8, 2009 2009 bomber. Pours clear amber with a 2 finger beige head that results in really nice lacing. The nose is citrus hops, caramel and booze. The taste is vanilla, ripe citrus, toffee and more booze with some resin in the finish. Oily mouthfeel. Good stuff – I’m not supposed to drink this until 2010 according to Deschutes, so I’ll drink my next one in a year to compare, but it’s pretty nice now – lots of hops.
