Smells of roasted malts and dark chocolate (yum!). Probably one of the better aromas I’ve found in a beer. Mmm, this beer is good. Roasted malts and hops shine up front, followed by a lush, dark chocolate and toasted finish. Very drinkable for a stout and quite tasty. Not overtly complex, but sometimes I prefer that. A very nice stout.

Smell is hardcore coffee with some dark chocolate. Taste is the same. Very impressive, very complex taste. Starts bitter with the coffee taste, then finishes with the dark chocolate. Great balance of bitter and sweet. donfardz64 (441), Wellington, New Zealand
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 28, 2009 Pours black with red edges. Nice roasty aroma, good and chocolaty with prominent dark fruit. Mouthfilling roast flavours of coffee and chocolate, a dry hoppy bitterness. Long roasty finish with a nice hop lingering too. A beautiful subtle, hoppy stout with hops complimenting the roast, not competing. dkachur (2431), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Pours a very dark brown almost black with a small creamy light tan head that diminishes quickly leaving decent spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is a roasted malt with coffee, dark fruit, and chocolate. Medium mouthfeel with a dry rich malt with roast and coffee with a nice dry finish. Pours an even black, maybe with a slight reddish hue, and a foamy tan head that sits around for quite a while. Smells roasty and stouty. Maybe a little booze, too. Taking a sip... This is a pretty heavy stout, actually - very malty and sweet, a totally different character from the drier Black Butte. Nice to see some good variety, even in the similar styles. There’s a pleasant bit of roasted malt blended with the sweetness along with a nice chocolate/coffee bitterness character. For being on the standard lineup for Deschutes, this is a nice big warming stout. Happy to try this one.
