Commercial Description:
Unconventional. Uncompromising. A Deschutes original. This IPA style beer utilizes hops in a way never attempted by our brewers, evident in both aroma and flavor. The Cascade and Centennial hops are balanced by 2 types of crystal malts as well as American pale malt and German pilsner malt. The wind beneath your wings, perhaps… IBU’s: 63

Toncatchers 2. Nose is sweet hoppy and sharp. Bright yellow/amber with off white head leaving a solid lace. Taste is sweet. Light hops and yeast. Clean finish in the front of the mouth, with a stickiness in the throat. Not bad...

Bottle. Copper red colored body, filtered. Nose:faint crystal malt, cherry and cedar scented hops, dried/stale bread crust and doughy yeast. Light grass hop note. Texture medium to full, chewy and resinous crystal malt. Oily cedar/bread/crust focused malt. Doughy, unkempt yeast, dirties the beer. Not a fan of crystal malt in IPA at all.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, caramel), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot, resin), lightly to moderately yeasty (dough), with light notes of fusel alcohol, rust/metal/dirt. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic, slightly metallic. As with many of the more recent samples of various Deschutes products I’ve had, this one is rather rough...luckily no bile smell this time, but higher alcohols are evident, along with a metallic/sandy note, plus the somewhat strong raw yeast odor detracts from whatever brightness/freshness might have been the goal here. Ok flavor balance but marred by a slightly dirty aftertaste that the nose portended. Another miss from this once-decent brewery.

Another tasty brew by Deschutes...vibrant dark amber hue with a significant amount of lacing. Aroma is bright citrus hops, grapefruit, pine, and just enough sweetness to not burn the nostrils. Flavor is balanced with a nice bitterness that sticks around a bit. Medium mouthfeel...yum.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark golden with a large creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is subdued sweet and piney hops - what’s there is nice.

The flavor is sweet fruits and caramel malts with a lightly spiced hop finish with medium bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to light bodied and pretty watery which washes out the flavors.

Overall, an OK IPA. It’s pretty subdued though.
