Commercial Description:
Unconventional. Uncompromising. A Deschutes original. This IPA style beer utilizes hops in a way never attempted by our brewers, evident in both aroma and flavor. The Cascade and Centennial hops are balanced by 2 types of crystal malts as well as American pale malt and German pilsner malt. The wind beneath your wings, perhaps… IBU’s: 63

22oz bottle 8/12/09 (Coaltrain-Colorado Springs)-Pours a clear amber with a nice tight off white head. Aroma of citrus, hops, malt, and grapefruit. Begins with a medium body along with the flavors of hops, malt, caramel, and citrus. This beer is very well balanced and quite tasty and drinkable.

22 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured a transparent copper-amber color, low carbonation, inviting one finger pillowly white head laced and gave me smokes on demand. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, and a slight wink of hot aluminum- but I like it. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt has been carmelized and is highly enjoyable, hops do not crash down the door but come in nicely, middle holds up just fine, finish is mildly acidic, smooth, and very inviting. Makes me think of an old red chair from long ago on a shoreline in Michigan- overcast, choppy small waves hitting the shore, just watching the waves, birds, and thinking. When a beer can awaken an old memory, it’s a winner in my book.

22oz bomber from the Beerhive in SLC. Pours a bright amber color with a medium foamy white head. The aroma is nce fresh citrus hops, light caramel and soft floral notes. The taste was full of citrus as well, some rich apricot like hops, lightly bitter and a large dose of sweet caramel malts. Very drinkable and tasty.

Burnt orange colour beer with a nice, solid off white head.Attractive. Aroma of mainlly lemongrass and zest, fresh. Taste is mainnly nice snappy hops with a pretty substantial malt background which gives it depth for the smooth hopiness to flow over. Quite nice palate to the beer. Overall a good drinkable lesser hopped IPA. Its fine.

The Red Chair is another winner in my IPA book. The aroma is thin, slightly metallic, and features the usual cast of grapefruit and an appealing soapiness. But the taste is much better. It’s weak, and that might be precisely why I like it. The Deschutes Red Chair taught me that it isn’t necessarily IPAs I loathe, but their typical strength. If I can drink a toned down IPA, it might be better. And that’s the experience I get with the Red Chair IPA - a weak, IPA with training wheels for those of us less enamored with bitterness. It’s grainy, amber like in it’s deeper, caramel-esque flavors, with a tolerable, well balanced bitterness, and even a good, palatable aftertaste. I’d even question whether this is an orthodox IPA, simply because I’ve found it so enjoyable. Whatever it is or isn’t, and however it’s tagged, I’ve really enjoyed this IPA lite.

(22oz bottle, thanks to blutt59) Pours a clear bright orange, big oily bubbles with great lacing. Nose is pine resin. Taste is slightly too bitter, and lingers that way on the palette. Overall a solid drinkable IPA.

Copper pour with nice off-white head, floral aroma of citrus and pine. Delicious taste with some grapefruit, balancing caramel malt with a well balanced bitter finish that is actually pretty smooth.

This pours a golden orange with an off-white head, leaving a nice lace. The aroma is soft and floral. The taste is sweet pilsner malt with a light bitterness. Not very bitter for an IPA, light in the body, and the pilsner malt is unique. An alright beer, but I want more hops from an IPA. This seems more like a Pale Ale but still a good brew.
