2008-12-22. Pitch black body with a good sized creamy tan head. Rich dry cocoa over dark malt in the aroma, dry roast malt, light kiss of alcohol. Flavour is likewise, rich roasty dark malt, dry moderately bitter finish. Notes of cocoa. Molasses I pick out mostly due to label influence, but it is there. (9+) Smooth medium to full bodied palate. Just really really good. 2007 Vintage, Bottle from Brown Jug, Anchorage

2008 bottle tasted on 1/4/09. Pours and obsidian black with a dissipating tan head. Aroma of bitter dark chocolates, coffee, and a gentle hint of molasses. Sharp mouthfeel at first with dominant flavors of dark chocolate and coffee. The drink smoothes out as it warms up and the sweet aftertaste becomes more evident. I’m going to sit on the rest of my bottles for a while. I think this one will taste stellar with a little more age on it.

(10/29/08) Bottle at Valley Brew brewery in Stockton (thanks a lot Mike!). Black with a brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Sweet roasty flavor with coffee, dark chocolate notes and some fruitiness. Full-bodied. Good stuff.

Side by side tasting of ’06 and ’07 bottles. Big thanks to theisti. The beers were remarkably similar. Roast, milk chocolate, and cocoa aroma (with the ’07 displaying a strong molasses note). Dark brown, nearly black with a mocha colored head. Thick bodied. Taste is dark chocolate, dark fruits, lactose along with coffee, molasses, and treacle in the ’07, while the ’06 was more integrated, making individual flavors stick out less, but also providing a more complex flavor. A nice imperial stout.

2007 vintage via and shared with oakbluff on New Years Eve. Black in colour with moderate carbonation. Strong aromas of chocolate, vanilla, wild licorice, caramel, and coffee. Very mellow in the mouth with a dominant chocolate fudge flavor, with secondary notes of vanilla, flint, and caramel. Finishes dry, with a nice peppery hop finish. Quality stuff.

2008 Bottle from Southbay Drugs. Pours a deep black with a brown head. This is one where the nose alone is worth it in the complexity department- I could smell this beer for a while. Nose is chocolate, alcohol, coffee, cinnamon, spice, licorice, and bourbon. Flavor is similar with depth and complexity on top. Coffee and coconut join up in the flavor. Lots of yellow lace when swirled. Gets better as it warms. Finish is lingering bitter chocolate. Excellent beer.

Drinking on tap with Andrew (BMan1113) at Najas in Cali. Pitch black, minimal head with nice lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, roasted toasted malts and hints of hops. Flavor the same with very good bitterness. Very solid very drinkable very lucky to have.
