THE DAN JOURNAL #200! Tasted 7/28/08. 22oz bomber. Pitch brown with a Clinging, lacing beige head. Big nose. Notes of smokey bacon, coffee, anise, chocolate and cocoa. Touch vanilla woody aroma. Full bodied and big. Complex malts and noticeable alcohol presence. Sweet and bitter and tart. Big notes. Sweet dark fruity undertones. Big coffee acidity. Bitterness shines from the warming alcohol and the rather deep hop profile. Definitely pick up on the peppery, spicy anise, licorice taste. The molassis seems more reduced and crystalized. But it does mellow out some of the sharp edges. This is hugely complex beer with a depth to match! Cheers, Dan!

On tap at the Deschutes tap room in Portland - This was a surprise beer to get in the summer, and it was not even on the menu! And on Brewfest weekend! What a treat! This is a beer for beer lovers. It is a very good stout with some complex flavors. I’m looking forward to the next winter’s brew!

Big thanks to Kevin and Karen for sharing this one. Big coffee, with everything else coming after that. Smooth, partly due to the oak-aging I’m sure, with some other more subtle tastes around it, mostly chocolate.

Its not a bullish stout like Stone’s Imperial Russian, but its softer, sweeter, more delicate. The oak conditioning and maple create smooth aroma and woody flavor. Oh god is it good.

22 oz, bottle, 2006 reserve. I was going to include this in my top-rated stouts blind tasting series but decided to drink the four from the barrel aged group over the next week to better enjoy each. Dark brown with a pocked tan head that leaves lacy chunks. Nose is coffee and chocolate cake. Notes of oak and vanilla with touches of licorice and alcohol. Smooth and tingly that abruptly thins with alcohol. Taste is coffee beans, dark chocolate, bitter grass and grapefruit. Very good but not quite special for me.

A great beer. Pours very thick - kind of like motor oil. The taste is fantastic tastes a little bit sweet at first, and finishes a tad bit bitter. The aroma smells like a lot of chocolate with a hint of molasses and caramel. Fills you up pretty quickly too! After one is done it feels as though you have been satisfied with a great full meal!!!

2007 Bottle. Thanks to my amazing girlfriend for this great birthday present. This beer lives up to the hype. Pours like motor oil with a large, tight, dark brown head that leaves tons of lacing covering a pitch black body. Aroma has lots of rich cohocolate, vanilla, some oak, and licorice. Taste is amazing. Like drinking slightly bitter chocolate syrup. Very mouthcoating. Slightly burnt, but very rich and full with vanilla and licorice notes. I love it!
