aroma of damp forest floor and raw alcohol. beer looks amazing, so thick, inky and heavy the head appears to sink into the black hole below. alcohol permeates all flavors with a bright flash. i’ll let it warm and see what comes out. the anise and oak come out, but the bite remains strong and prohibits the delicacy.

Side by side with ’08 from Bevmo, San Marcos, CA. and ’06 from Drewbeerme. ’06 - Opaque black with small burnt tan head. Aroma is dirty coffee, strawberry, surprisingly fresh smelling, chocolate milk, well rounded. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, pine, sweet, resiny. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Nice aging. 8 5 7 3 16 = 3.9 ’08- opaque black with large burnt tan head. Big hop aroma, green, coffee and chocolate roastiness. Flavor is sweet chocolate, burnt ashy, weird. Medium to light body, light carb. Very green, big difference between the two. 7 5 6 3 14 = 3.5 obviouly preffered the aged version

@ blind tasting - Black body, light brown head, some lacing; Quite metallic very clear burnt wood aromas, some soft notes like oatmeal as well; Soft texture, slightly fruity, slightly sweet body; Long milk chocolate soft finish, slightly fruity sweet, slightly bitter. Strange composition.

2008 local bottle. Pours black like used motor oil with a fluffy chocolate milk head with decent lacing. Big aroma of chocolate, menthol astringency and roasted malt. Flavour starts a little hot (this is a younger bottle) but mellows with some roasted nuts, malt and coffee. Did not really pick up any licorice flavours but that’s fine with me.

Beer pours jet black with a thick, retained dark tan colored head. Aroma is rich with vanilla and cream, chocolate cake and wood. Mouthfeel is slick and elegantly soft. Flavor is very enjoyable with molasses, very rich dark cholcolate and enought hops to produce a dry, hoppy finish. Delicous. Thanks to Larry Pitonka!!!

2008 bottle. Very dark black pour with some light brown head. Aroma is very raosted, chocolate, some wood. Flavor is very roasted malt, a little meaty and burnt. Kind of strong, but not that good tasting. I am just tired of beers full of crappy flavors and barrel aging.
