Aroma is rich and full. Plenty of chocolate coffee notes. Full bodied, coating and smooth on the palate. Notes of bourbon and wood tannins are intertwined with a rich chocolate flavor. I don’t really find the molasses and licorice in flavor or aroma. Long dry bitter finish. Damn well done. brianprentiss (475), Portland, Oregon, USA

Poured a dark, dark (motor oil) black with an averaged sized brown head. Aromas of roast, coffee, caramel, molasses, and very light wood. Tastes of roast, dark fruits, licorice, espress, very light vanilla, and chocolate. Almost a coffee with cream / latte. Smooth body that was way too easy to drink. Alcohol content hidden. Nice lacing left on the glass. turbo (1254), Arizona, USA

After cutting my wrist open getting the wax sealed cap off..the beer poured engine oil black with a super thick creamy, long lasting brown head and heavy lacing. How in the hell can anyone give this anything less than a 5 for appearance!?
Aroma and flavor of rich burnt roasted malts, coffee, molasses, dark chocolate, alcohol... with pine, citrus and alcohol on the finish.
Awesome beer...better than Keystone for sure! SDalkoholic (1196), Chula Vista, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 9, 2008 Bottle from Windy City Liquor. I was so very relieved after I got my hands on this bottle since I had been hearing about it for couple of months now. The aroma is a delighting smell of dark chocolate malts with a very tiny hint of cream or milk. The appearance is a pitch black stout rested in peace with a firm layer of head. The flavor is a strong and bold tasting of roasted malt but yet has a minor taste of chocolate still. The palate is rich and creamy which leaves behind an excellent finish along with a moderate dryness. This should have been distributed more than it was. bleeng (600), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Feb 28, 2008 2007 version: 22 oz bomber. Pours wicked dark black-opaque with a thick, brown head. Damn wax is a bitch to get off the cap....Nose of chocolate, sweetness, oatmeal, some alcohol-a bit of brown alcohol...Taste is caramelly, chocolate, alcohol, faint background of bourbon/whiskey but not overwhelming. This beer rocks with the mouth-thick, viscous, chewy, full and lasting all the way down. Definitely one of the better Impys, if not overall beers, I’ve had. Wonderful. Dark brown color, looks thick from far away but sloshes around just like regular beer. Huge aroma of molasses, alcohol, raspberry, bourbon--taste also has caramel, chocolate, burnt wood. Soothing smooth mouthfeel with a kick at the finish of sour licorice and lemons. Wow beer.
