I finally reached a point where I had to say ’enough..’ This is a full on onslaught on my palate and leaves very little to be desired. At 11%, oak aged, with molasses and licorice - how much more could you want, how meaner can beer get? Surely, I think, some gasoline mixed with battery acid for that extra bite? Maybe gunpowder mixed with cocaine would take this beer to full marks? Nevertheless, I’ve come a full circle. My quest for imperial stouts perfection ends with this beer. I’m going for a lager, anybody with me?

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 4, 2009 Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Pours a deep, dark brown/black with copper head. Aroma of very nice dark roasted grain, nice bitterness, little astringent, some black licorice. Flavor is malty, dark roasted grain, baking chocolate, dark roasted grain bitterness, some oak, alcohol spiciness. Mouth feel is heavy body, silky smooth, low-medium carbonation. Overall, very nice beer, very warming and tasty. I enjoyed very much! Nena (142), West Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Dec 1, 2009 Poured black with a moderate brown head. The aroma is sweet and chocolately, with some nuttiness, wood, toffee, and coffee. Flavor is up front molasses and toasty, smokey chocolate malt flavors with the licorice appearing on the midpalate. Some fruity, dried cherry flavors also come forward. The finish is complexly bitter as a touch of hops and the oak come through, as well as a bit of alcohol warmth.. For an 11%, the alcohol is quite concealed, and pleasant bitter bite at the end kept me from tiring of the sweetness. Mouthfeel is smooth, rich, and mouthcoating. This stuff really lived up to the hype for me. PrinceofNessus (236), Westminster, Colorado, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Nov 29, 2009 This is a fantastic brew. The pour is dark brown and opaque, the head is dark brown. The beer itself is fragrant, smelling strongly of roasted malts whos conversion was stopped just short of burnt, chocolate, and molasses. The mouthfeel is thick and tasty, somewhat bitter for some palates, but enjoyable for those who love a slight surplus of IBUs. Both the aroma and taste of The Abyss hold shades of the bourbon barrels this beer was aged in. The finish is dry and pleasant. The 11% ABV goes almost unnoticed against the complex flavors of this beer. boamr (136), Pennsylvania, USA

Has a chocolate, woody taste to it. Could use a little time in the bottle and would like to try an older one Jblauvs (575), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Nov 28, 2009 Bottle from whole foods. Pours like carbonated motor oil with a fluffy coffee colored head. Smells like malts, chocolate, toffee, coffee, graham crackers, and licorice. Tastes like roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate, coffee, faint licorice, and flowers. Mouth is dry but not too dry, still leaves me thirsty, the alcohol is warming and contagious, I want more...now I’m thirsty again...damn, this is a never-ending circle isn’t it? Good thing I have my powerade here. madvike (326), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Nov 28, 2009 2009 bottle shared by MrPickles - Drank this one side-by-side next to 09 Darkness. Pours beautifully, with a tan head above pure blackness. Yep, it’s an impy. Smells of coffee, oak sharpness, light chocolate, and that licorice they talk about on the bottle. There’s some sweetness in the taste, milkiness, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. Deep roast on the finish, with a bit of oak and hoppiness. Not burnt and tarry like some impys, but not hoppy like the Darkness we drank next to this one. Smooth and pretty chewy, and overall a fine beer. Not sure if I’d camp out for it, but good nonetheless. oteyj (761), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 25, 2009 Thanks jake65! 2007 vintage. Pitch black pour with a beautiful tan head that is somewhat slow to recede. Aroma is heavy in the dark sugar department- date, fig and plum combine with molasses, lactic sugar, and brown sugar to culminate in a mildly warming alcoholic booze and heavily roasted barley. Flavor is chalked full of roasted barley, creamy chocolate, espresso, fennel, molasses, wood, burnt caramelized dark sugars, and a foreboding ashen malt profile. Palate is thick, rich, velvety, charred and silky. The uniqueness of this brew in a sea of stouts makes for a memorable and wholly enjoyable quaff.
