Commercial Description:
Our flagship beer. A large percentage of black malt give this distinctive ale its dark brown/black color and that slightly roasted flavor. Magnum hops provide a backbone of bitterness and large additions of Mt. Hood hops later in the boil come right through in the finish. The result is a highly drinkable dark ale which bridges the gap between pale and porter.

Tap- rated from memory: (Thanks to Mike/Eyedrinkale who supplied a jockey box at my 2009 Halloween party... A very generous man!) Pours a deep brown with a ruby hue and a dense tan head of film. Has a richly malty aroma with toffeeish soft sweetness and apparent nutty crystal malt character. Rounded body/mouthfeel. Has a rich dark caramel sweetness accompanied by a very light earthy roast. As it warms and the carbonation settles down there’s a subtle fruity Northwest U.S. hop character that goes well with the malty body. Not a bad brown ale.

Tap at Ginger Man. Brown pour with a thin off-white head. The nose is lightly sweet with a soft toasted malt character. Fairly fresh smelling if a bit typical. There is a touch of herbal character. Flavour is of soft brown malt with a bit of woody hop bitterness. A little bit thin. Toasty with a little bit of soft cocoa. Undistinguished but drinkable.

Bottle from Capones, obvious infected appearance, looks like dave, dmac, had a similar experience. Brune body with a huge over flowing bottle rocket glass of foam yellow off white head. Dust y light fruit tones, light chocolate, moth and coco notes. Acidic like tartness amongst the strong assertive carbonation. Still enjoyed the flavor despite having to shake my glass repetitively to expel the majority of the carbonation.

12 oz bottle from Capones. Either this was infected or this is just one lousy beer. One the initial pour my straight from the fridge bottle poured into my Hennepin glass produced about an inch of deep brown liquid body and four inches of tight foamy light beige head. After twenty minutes of allowing the head to settle and pouring little by little what remained was aa deep brown body and some large foamy sections of light beige head that looked like a glass of root beer. The aroma had just a slight hint of infection with some medicinial aromas but was mostly dominated by dry dusty grains. My first few initial sips were met with a pop rocks fullness on the mouthfeel that subsided into a simply overcarbonated watery body. the flavor too had a hint of medicine about it and some chocolate malts. I’m fairly confident that this was’t what the brewer was shooting for as a brown ale but I’m not about to drive an hour and a half back to Capones and drop another $3.50 on a bottle to find out for sure.

Deep chestnut pour with a white head. Aroma is nutty but i also detect some peat. Reminds me of a scotch ale. Peat carries into the flavor along with some light roasted nuts and hops.

Deep brown with thin white head. No real aroma to speak of. Flavor has some roastiness but lightly astringent as well. Very ho hum.

Dark brown black pour with tan head slight roasted and citrus hop aroma. Taste of roasted malts caramel and a nice hoppy citrus finish well balanced not a bad average brew
