Diebels Alt

on tap - brown beer with a thick beige head. Some sweet aroma. Flavour: Little bit of maltiness and sweetness. Little bit boring.

330ml bottle, Leipzig, 21st August 2008. Light brown in colour with a soft malty palate. Easy to drink.

Long, smooth notes of solid bitter hopping rounded by pale fruit malty structure. Both refreshing and satisfying. Klasse!!

33CL bottle, bought at the dekamarkt in IJmuiden. Good beer. Light and drinkeable. Nice beer for by the diner.

Pours a fairly dark, burnt amber brown into my glass. A decent head of foam says hello, then retreats to a thin ring around my glass. Lightly sweet nose with hints of caramel and nuts. After my first quaff, I am rather surprised at its light body, almost lighter than a brown ale. This makes sense though, considering Alt is more of a session brew meant for easy drinking and enjoyment. I detect light caramel notes along with nuts and toasted bread. There are some bittering hops in the finish while a hint of lemon mingles with the malty sweet profile. The body is light and goes down with nary a whimper of protest. Very mild in both palate and body, Diebel’s Alt looks and smells more than the sum of her contents. As I finish more of my glass, more nuts and bittering hops with lemon linger on my tongue. The malts never cloister, leaving an almost dry finish which is complimented by the afore mentioned nuts and hops.
Diebel’s Alt was an interesting foray into a style of beer I had never tasted before. Maybe next time I get my lips on an Alt beer, I’ll go for some sausage and kraut.
