Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

From a 12oz Bottle. Courtesy of oteyj. Pours a mostly transparent, chocolately black color with tannic hues and a two finger head of fine bubbled, beige foam. Rich chocolate-cocoa notes on top of a firm roast malt base. The vanilla is noticeable, but plays more of a back-up role to the chocolate and roast. It’s kind of three dimensional in that way, chocolate, roast, vanilla - in that order. No real hop or yeast characters present in the aroma, leaving a nice, clean impression. Medium bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel with a somewhat thin, yet pleasing texture. The flavors are more of the same from the nose - chocolate, roast, and vanilla, in order of strength. Finishes clean and chocolately, with a touch of milky sweetness. Great flavors; my only complaint is the body doesn’t really stand up to the richness of the flavors. No oxidation detected, but I think some (or more) flaked barley or oats could really enhance the mouthfeel while keeping the same flavor integrity. Thanks, James!

Bottle, pours out black with a slight lacing tan head. Very attractive aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, and a light vanilla note. Taste is very complex, with a full, rich mouth feel. Roasted malt, rich chocolate, roasted (but not burnt) malts, vanilla, caramel, sweet cream and a little bit of hops. Very well balanced, nothing short of world-class.

Near black in color with a very tall head of nugget like foam. Very heavy sheet of lace. Scents of chocolate extract and vanilla. HInts of caramel and toasted malt. Big flavors of dark chocolate and vanilla. Smooth feel, but seems a bit flat. MIddle has a touch of floral hops. Finish has a bit of oak and cream. LIghtly acidic in the linger. A nice brew reminds me of a tame Southern Tier brew.

Chocolate LOVE! Pours black with tan head. Notes of prunes, raisins, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, and even a little chocolate milk. Nice smoky body, but not a SMOKED body. Finishes clean with a cacao note.

finally, after a long anticipated wait...here it sits before me. bottled as "aphrodite" it already looks awesome with this hotty on the bottle. it pours a pitch black under a medium sized brown head. the aroma is of perfectly melded milk chocolate and roasted barley with some cream. oh yes! the flavor is melted milk chocolate with the richness of a real candy bar, a pinch of salt and faint hints of vanilla. the palate is creamy and med-full but refreshing too. if i had a million dollars i would fill a pool with this beer. pure goodness. i cannot find a single flaw. i’m not worthy! my first perfect 5.
