Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Black with a khaki head. Nose is vanilla, light roasted malts and chocolate. Great on the palate with a great flavor of vanilla, roasted malts in the back and a hint of chocolate.

Draught @ Bar Volo, Toronto, ON: Pours jet black, small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, anise, vanilla, and bourbon. AMAZING flavour with all of the above, nicely roasted malts, and a more carbonation than expected. Still, it’s almost like drinking silk. Wow, great stout.

Bottle, Aphrodite. The pour is typical for a stout, dark brown-black, nice little head (perhaps not as big as many of its peers). The aroma was tons of vanilla and tapioca with a bit of cocoa underneath, light roast, sweet smelling. The flavor was overkill vanillla and tapioca, quite a disappointment actually, given all the hype this brew gets. Maybe this is one of those classic, "It has never been the same since they started bottling it, blah, blah, blah," but this thing was way over-hyped and I’m not that excited to have finally tried it. It wouldn’t surprise me if they added sugar and vanilla extract to this batch. Mouthfeel was a bit thin and light. Sorry, DdC, normally love ya, but....

Draught at Volo, Toronto. It’s a dark, dark brown stout with a thin tan head. It has a smooth creamy mouthfeel. The aroma is full of chocolate with coffee and some green, leafy hops in the background. The flavour is wonderfully balanced with nice dark roast coffee beans, vanilla, some subtle dark cherry. The finish is long with more coffee. The vanilla compliments the stout flavours very well.
