I would buy this beer again just for the label art, but the beer is also awesome, so I guess it’s a win-win. Standard stout appearance with an average head. Looks good but not exceptional. The aroma is a great example of what can be done with the roastiness in a stout. Add some vanilla and chocolate, and you have sensory overload. There is no denying the confectionary qualities here, and burnt sugar bounces smoothly off of chocolate cake, vanilla frosting, and a little salty licorice. After anticipating a cupcake in the aroma, the flavor is actually pretty dry and has a solid roasty, dark chocolate bitterness in the finish, while still having a nice maltiness up front. This is actually in the border of a completely quaffable stout that only pretends to be a dessert sipper. The body is somewhere near the middle and seems about right for a 6.5% beer. Delicious stuff all around, that combines intoxicating aromas with a well balanced and very drinkable liquid. I’d take this over peche mortel any day.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 28, 2009 A big fat thanks to nbutler11 (I think) for this appearance. Nose is full, dry, almost tart coffee. There is the faintest rounding of flavor - as with vanilla or nibs - but mostly this is more tart and concentrated than even Peche. Jet black, whose flavor is stark like a brick with charcoaled coffee and not much else. I missed the faint hops, cocoa and v-beans. BuckNaked (1211), Tempe, Arizona, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 28, 2009 12oz bottle from Smoker’s Den in Bennington, VT: Pours to an opaque, black colored body with a medium dark tan colored head. The aroma is sweet dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt, kind of a dry cocoa husk scent, without any real detectable hops. Flavor shows roasted malt & bittersweet chocolate up front, with some dark bitter chocolate, very dark roasted malt, and hints of vanilla towards the middle, finishing with notes of unsweetened dark chocolate and vanilla bean. Full-bodied, medium carbonated. What I really like about this one is how well the flavors compliment each other without trying to be imperial, extreme, or really overwhelming. The body is lighter than I expected it to be, which makes it more refreshing, and the chocolate and vanilla flavors end up being very ephemeral, which drives me back for another sip. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 28, 2009 Bottle from Keg Liquor. Poured black color with medium creamy tan head that lasted with excellent lacing. Aroma is very complex with roasted malt, vanilla and bourbon. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy chocolate bittersweet flavor and moderate to heavy complex dark sweet bourbon finish of long duration. Standout complex beer for dessert or with a cigar.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 27, 2009 Pours dark brown with a brown head. The aroma is sweet milk chocolate and anise. A touch of acidic black coffee. The flavor is very dry and roasted with notes of spices, licorice, chocolate, and coffee. A very distinctive and complex stout. Ashy finish. This would go great with some biscotti. harrisoni (6946), Ashford, Kent, England

Black, tan head. Vanilla choc coconut aroma. Slightly powdery choc. Quite a lot of vanilla,, but I thought it was drinkable enough, just too much powdery choc. Dry finish. Yes, fails a bit in the mouth. ksurkin (408), Norfolk, Virginia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 26, 2009 11.5oz bottle, labeled Aphrodite, via trade with zathrus13. thanks! pours a deep black with a full, creamy, mocha-brown head and great lacing. aroma is wonderful with huge notes of chocolate cake mix, vanilla bean ice cream, dark, roasted coffee, with subtle hints of black cherry, caramel, wood, and mild soy. flavor is simply outstanding with huge chocolate and vanilla notes that blend seamlessly together without being overly sweet backed by subtle notes of espresso, walnuts, dark fruits, and toffee with a lingering, roasted coffee and bitter cocoa finish. palate is medium bodied but silky smooth and a little dry on the tongue with not a trace of alcohol. overall, a wonderfully crafted, world-class stout. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 26, 2009 Appearance: Pours out an inky black body with an inch of dense tan-colored foam.
Smell: Oh my! What we have here is a rather vivid chocolate-scented aroma akin to cramming your nose up to a bowl of chocolate cupcake mix. Also, there’s some good notes of roasted grains and split vanilla bean pods.
Taste: Flowing roasty, coffee-toned maltiness along with tastes of vanilla bean, unsweetened chocolate, and even dark chocolate. Moderate sweetness. Light touch of dried dark fruit. It’s got a nice spicy component akin to putting a bit of nutmeg on one’s tongue. Drying finish with a dusting of spice and final hints of cocoa and vanilla.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Fairly smooth mouthfeel.
Drinkability: A mellow, pleasant sweet treat of a stout that’s in the same vein as Southern Tier’s Choklat, though presented with a far more subtler touch.
