Commercial Description:
This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

[Brewed February 2005, sampled July 2005] An unclear amber beer with a small orange head. The aroma is very hoppy and grassy combined with notes of lemon. The flavor is sweet with lots of hops and alfa acids, but also some notes of wood. Nice for a five months old IIPA - I’d love to taste this fresh.

Sampled at the anniversary party, bottle dated September 2004, so one year old.
Opaque, murky peach, with a few flecks of yeast deposits swirling about, topped with a patchy, off-white lace. I wasn’t expecting much aroma-wise from an aged IPA, but the hops were definately present and pleasant, oily and resinous. An exquisite balance of dessicating alcohol, cloying malt and smooth but persistant hop astringency. Not overly hoppy, in fact nothing was out of place. Of all the aged bottles we had that night, it was the one that I had the lowest expectations, and it just might have been the best of the lot.

Candied malt aroma, treacle, cloudy reddish orange, pours a very large white head. Flavour is kicked off with full malt, bold citrus hops, caramel and treacle follow. Very well balanced, wonderfully bitter, Lovely!

bottle. 1 year old. shiny orange-copper body with a small off-white head. piney hops in the aroma and light yeastiness and perhaps a little bit of orange. prickly hops and carbonation. very good balance for an imperial and it’s treachously easy to drink with alcohol and sweet malt marrying the body. very good.

(Rating #283)

Slightly hazy amber, neat, fine crown. Soft , smooth ale , strong but silky hop accent , woody malt and well refined alcohol . Judging on aroma alone Brewmaster done solid job maturing this ale . Medium bodied , medium /fine carbonation . Bitter hops are very well blended with smooth alcohol. Very approachable beer despite its potency.
