Commercial Description:
This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

Well this one is an interesting rating in that I had it fresh on tap and then got lazy and set my notebook aside without entering the rating, then went back and had it bottled and rated it again. so then:

Draught: Copper body with a lasting head. Smooth hops - I am still a complete neophyte about identifying the specific hop but maybe Cascade? - it was fresh and outdoorsy with meadow and pine. Sweet malts are there too and a beautiful lingering finish. Rated this version.

Bottle: End of the bottle cloudiness but still a nice rich brown. Hoppy but subdued and musty and maltier than expected. Thin through finish and clearly past its prime. (7/4/7/3/13)

Draught at the brewpub
Light brown, dark gold, white head, nice lacing. Nose of light crispy hops, some nice malty balance. The flavor is tangy, balanced, good, lots of maltiness and fruits. The finish is creamy, lightly tart, good.

Pours a cloudy orange medium amber with a lasting slight off white head. Aroma is a bit harsh with lots of hops, pine-sol, citrus- orange, pineapple and some grapefruit. Flavor was aobut the same beign very resiny and harsh with hops and a slight prickly feeling on the palate. Reminded me a lot of Stone 5th anniversary IPA which I also thought was very harsh.

Out of a bottle at the pub during the 2005 RBSG. Golden copper color with a huge rocky white head. When I opened the bottle, foam extruded out of the top for long minutes in a slow, hypnotic flow. Nose has lots of candied orange peel and tangerine from the hops. Sweet grapefruit juice, tangerine and peach. Finish isn’t as hoppy as expected, with only a short citrus finish. Big beer, but not a typical USA IIPA.

Bottle...RBSG2005... Lightly hazy, deep amber ale with a large, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. Floral, citrusy nose delivers plenty of grapefruit with lesser notes of wildflowers and caramel. The flavor has better balance than most IIPAs with plenty of caramel and sweetened black tea to temper the intense grapefruit, floral stems, peach and mandarin orange. Medium to full-bodied with a sticky mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Finishes a touch alcoholic and dry. Excellent and different. Maybe an English style IIPA?

Pours a thick deep gold/orange with a big slight off white lacing head. Even toasted malt and delicate very balanced herbal and toasted hop. Grainy, light and sweet. Is this actually a IIPA? Not really. Some gin and rind in the finish.

07.09.05 Bomber at brewpub, RBSG. Hazed orangish amber with an ample though fading off-white head. Smells a bit like rain soaked clothes...wait, maybe that’s just me. Lots of Belgie yeastiness in this one. Something fresh and springlike about it. Every sip is more yeast, pit fruits. Plenty bitter but not much hops present in flavor. Thinner body is small for the style.
