Commercial Description:
This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

[Brewed February 2005, sampled July 2005] An unclear amber beer with a small orange head. The aroma is very hoppy and grassy combined with notes of lemon. The flavor is sweet with lots of hops and alfa acids, but also some notes of wood. Nice for a five months old IIPA - I’d love to taste this fresh.

Sampled cask conditioned at the brewpub.
Hazy golden. Intensely grapefruity. Sweet and very hoppy with lots of grapefruit and rich, soft mouthfeel, Very bitter finish. Interesting with a DIPA with a focus on mouthfeel.

Bright amber colour. A little woodsy, with hints of crystal malt and a fair bit of alcohol. Strangely watery body...highly irregular for the style. Flavour has light notes of woody hop and a fair amount of toasty malt. Quite a bit of late alcohol heat. Underwhelming to say the least.

(Bottle, RBSG05) Clear amber body topped by big beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, herbal, some grapefruit, caramel. Taste is medium sweet, herbal, some grapefruit, light caramel, dry finish. Medium-full body.

Cask-conditioned Clear amber appearance with red suggestions and a yellowish thin head. Aroma is very fresh, mostly from grassy herbal hops. A very "green" aroma with hints at salt and pepper. The mouthfeel is top notch, big and creamy medium body, ultra-smooth and convincing/appealing. Herbal grassy bitterness all the way with earthy peaks. Caramelic malt shines through in the middle while the finish is crisp and leaves a salty aftertaste. A very fresh tasting ale and better than the Rogue I2PA it was inspired from in my opinion.

Bottle...RBSG2005... Lightly hazy, deep amber ale with a large, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. Floral, citrusy nose delivers plenty of grapefruit with lesser notes of wildflowers and caramel. The flavor has better balance than most IIPAs with plenty of caramel and sweetened black tea to temper the intense grapefruit, floral stems, peach and mandarin orange. Medium to full-bodied with a sticky mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Finishes a touch alcoholic and dry. Excellent and different. Maybe an English style IIPA?

Lightly hazy copper bronze with a well lacing off-white head. Dry, grainy, lightly toasted and hoppy aroma. Body is lightly sweet and caramely with some sticky toffee and a good, but not very potent hoppy balance. Not quite as extreme as some American versions, but a very drinkable double pale ale.

Palate healing through chewable hop medicine...Orange seeds are planted and watered with silky caramel...A great conifer rises and points to the surrounding spirits...

A 1-year-old bottle (aged at the brewpub for on-site consumption) proved to be still quite hoppy in the nose, flavor and bitterness, but in a much more diplomatic way. Carbonation is more vivacious as well, straddling Belgian and American stylings. A creature which is evolving well, in part due to its rich maltiness.
