Commercial Description:
This shimmering gold amber coloured beer has a light, smoked malt aroma. It’s well-rounded, with a great taste of malts and with a hint of sweetness. The smoky taste is quite dominant at each new draught. An original and notable beer, La Charbonnière is a house specialty.

Pours hazy copper with a nice 2 finger head, slow to dissipate. Aroma is very smoky, with peat added. Taste is incredible- reminds me of smoked salmon. Great palate, fantastic beer.

November 2007 notes: Pours amber with small head. Aroma is very smoky, with some malts. Really interesting. Flavor is seriously smoky, maybe also some nuts. I thought that the palate of this beer suited the smokiness well: it was medium bodied with soft carbonation, just light enough to prevent the smokiness from being overbearing. Really enjoyable and unusual.

On tap at Dieu du Ciel. Pours a nice medium amber color with light caramel malt & pretty hefty messquite smoky aroma. Taste starts off slightly sweet & follows up with that smoke flavor which fades ever so slightly away as you work your way through the glass. Nice beer

Amber. Aroma is richly smoked with caramel malts. Not overly complex, very straightforward and very drinkable.

On tap at the brewpub. I wias looking forward to this one. Standard amber colour with good clarity and white head. You can definitely pick up the wisp of smoke in the nose. Just like a recently snuffed out campfire. Taste is more moderate than I thought it would be. The smoke is definitely there, but not in your face or harsh. I don’t pick up much in the hop department, just a mildly smokey, easy driking amber ale. Would have been nice to spend more time there and settle into a couple of these.

(Rating #1209)

On tap at the brewpub, visited June 23 2007 with a big group of friends (no fellow rateberrieans though). Clear deep gold with a modest white head. Pleasantly smokey aroma (woodsmoke), not overpowering. A different kind of smokiness than the german rauchbiers I’ve had, which come across as a more meaty/salty smokiness. Lightly malty, maybe slightly caramel flavours that are enveloped in a very balanced clean woodsmoke character. A beautiful balancing act that delivers a very drinkable and continuously pleasant smoked beer that I never became tired of. I think this one is underrated for the style. I loved it.
