Commercial Description:
This shimmering gold amber coloured beer has a light, smoked malt aroma. It’s well-rounded, with a great taste of malts and with a hint of sweetness. The smoky taste is quite dominant at each new draught. An original and notable beer, La Charbonnière is a house specialty.

draft during RBSG visit - smoke, wood, and grass make up the aroma wafting off a golden body with an off white head. flavors are burnt wood and toast, little bit of sweet malts and maple. i liked the amount of smoke involved in this beer, as it wasnt overwhelming, but was complimentary to the other flavors going on, instead of being the only flavor.

07.09.05 Tap at brewpub, RBSG. Deep amber, big beige head lasts. Much smoke, maple sugar and wood fire. Lots of smoked meat flavor, spicy. Wet finish is somewhat sweet. Reminds me of Cinderbock in its juicy meatiness. The woodiness of the smoke hints at Heller Trum, but that notion is wisked away as the body of this one tends toward tiring and heavy.

Glass at the brewpub at RBSG Montreal. Almost clear medium amber with lasting wisps of moderate froth...brown sugar smoked over a maple fire in the lovely nose, peat and vanilla peeking out later...pale malt with a touch of lemon gives this a lightness uncommon in smoked beers, wood-fired bitterness creeps in subtly interacting with the soft body well...slightly harsh metallic edge at the end isn’t exactly disfiguring but does give me pause, as does a certain cottony character just after midpalate...perhaps just a touch too light for the bitterness, this is nevertheless an intriguing experiment that I wish I could have tried more.

(RBSG05) Crystal clear amber body topped by off-white head. Aroma is medium sweet, delicious smoked (Gouda). Taste is medium sweet, smoke, caramel, smoked cheese. Nice smoke burp. Light-medium body. The smoke evokes Aecht Schlenkerla -- truly lovely.

RBSG 2005. Orangey amber, small white head. Mild smokey aroma has notes of campfire and barbecue. Surprisingly subtle aroma. Mushrooms make a brief appearance that is incongruous and possibly imagined. Flavour is restrained, with the smoke accenting the malt rather than boorishly pushing it away. Average palate. Finally! A smoked beer that doesn’t suck! ;) (I’m kidding… mostly.)

RBSG 2005 at 2005: Poured amber/copper with a smallish offwhite head. Smokey aroma. Quite a large amount of smoke flavor- ham, sausage. Sweet finish. Lightly carbonated. Nice if you like smoked beers.

2005 RBSG Montreal Saturday. Amber colour with a frothy off-white head. Caramel overwhelmed by a pleasing smoky bacon aroma. Nicely blanced smokines and malts, with a medium body and slightly oily mouthfeel.
