Commercial Description:
Corne du diable (French for "Horn of the devil") is a contemporary interpretation of the classic English India Pale Ale. This new style, born on the west coast of North America, is characterized by stronger and hoppier beers. The result is a red ale expressing caramel flavours coming from the malt, sharp bitterness and powerful hop aromas, thanks to dry hopping.

Bottle. Immediately after opening the bottle, the lovely hoppy aromas enters the nose and promise something good. It pours a hazy orange body under an inch of off-white head leaving nice lacings. Lovely piney, resiny, slightly citrusy, floral and malty-sweet nose. Touch of beef-stock too. The flavor is much the same, on the hoppy side, with malts and sugars trying to balance it. That is doesn’t succeed is all fine, it’s a lovely IPA, with the bitterness coming nicely in the finish. Full-bodied and effervescent. (081002)

Pours dark amber orange with a 1/4 inch tan head. Nose is instant crystal malt, doughy, nutty, bready, etc, along with some light nut and dried fruit hop notes that are overwhelmed by the crystal malt. Flavor is much the same: overwhelming presence of crystal malt, which has no place whatsoever in IPA, and then as background noise only are some light fruity hop notes, some peanut notes, etc, and only a mild bitterness. Not my cup of tea.

Pours a copper/amber body, slightly hazed, with a modest ecru head. The aroma is a light caramel overlaid by moderate hoppy scents of grapefruit, zest of lemon, orange rind, and earth. Those hops perform much better in the flavor, the bitterness intensified with just enough of a sweet malty backbone to support it. The finish is dry with a prolonged citric bitterness. Way too easy to drink.

Slightly hazed ruddy copper color with a tall beige head. My initial sniff leads me to believe that this is a simple strong amber. What ever grain is utilized I find it in many ambers and I am not a fan. Woody licorice comes to mind. Some light orange citric qualities join in. Graham cracker flavors topped with some orange jam. Fairly thin in feel. Long citric finish along with a hint of metal. Best I can call this is a strong amber.

Bottle@Home. Nice typical American floral aroma. Amber color, hazy, off-white head, good lace. Sweet, bitter, floral, grassy. All the ingredients you’d expect. Light, tasteful and good balance. Yummy.

12oz bottle from Bauer Wine and Spirits, Boston MA, 9 November 2009. Hazy gingery copper colour. Diminishing off-white head. Assertive hops in the aroma - more herbaceous than resinous. Some flowery edges. Sweetish but strongly bitter flavours. Sharp, citric fruit with lots of grapefruit and tart oranges. Hops become more pine accented towards the finish. Lingering, bitter aftertaste. Texture is quite slick and a little syrupy but that is counteracted by a somewhat astringent, slightly acidic mouthfeel. The overall impression is hop dominated - more bitter than aromatic. Still, plenty of depth and flavour make for a pretty satisfying experience.

Bottle from Crown Liqour, indy, In. Poured hazy copper color with an average to large frothy off-white head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate sour citrus and caramel aroma. Medium body with a slick smooth texture. Medium bittersweet flavor with moderate sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This solid complex beer did meet my expectations.
