Commercial Description:
Corne du diable (French for "Horn of the devil") is a contemporary interpretation of the classic English India Pale Ale. This new style, born on the west coast of North America, is characterized by stronger and hoppier beers. The result is a red ale expressing caramel flavours coming from the malt, sharp bitterness and powerful hop aromas, thanks to dry hopping.

Rerate (7-3-7-3-14=3.4): Strong floral, lemon/lime hop character in the nose over sweet malt character. Clear copper coloured body is topped by a decent white head that recedes to a partial cover with some lace. Very sweet malt character with lingering lime citrus hops. Sharp and pronounced bitterness verges on harsh at times. Dry medium body with moderate carbonation. Bottle (Gift, Oct-07) sampled with Beershine and Oakes. Thanks, MartinT!

Original rating (7-5-7-4-13=3.6): Strong citrusy American hop nose. Off-white head on caramel coloured beer. This looks good. Big hop flavour with some underlying malt sweetness. Flavours seem to arrive in sequence rather than being blended. Mouthfeel is as thick as one would normally expect from this pub. On tap.

Bottle and served in my GI IPA tulip: Rich caramel hue topped by a nice frothy slightly off-white head which left ring of lace upon the glassware. The aroma has notes of resiny and acidic fruits, grassy and herbal , caramel and bready malts, slight bubblegum and medicinal vapours. Smells more akin to a strong ale than a crisper IPA. The taste follows suit with pungent resiny hops, light grapefruit and orange, grassy twang and a chalky metallic tone supported by a chewy bready malt backbone. While it is bitter, it is hardly a hop bomb however. Again I get more "Strong Ale or malter IIPA" character than a crisper and more drinkable IPA. Hardly bad (in fact pretty good still) but just not what I expect.

Bottle. High good looking off-white head. Hazy amber body. Fruity lemon peach aroma with notes of caramel. Flavor rather complex and hard to describe but the fruityness of the aroma is less dominant in the flavor of caramel, grass and maybe pine. Low carbonation and a long bitter aftertaste.

Bottle from Festivus! Poured fiery medium orange with about an inch of beige head sticking around. The aroma was bright and all hopped up with floral and deeper grapefruit standing out.. warmth brought out a layer of caramel and a bouquet of darker fruit.. well-done. The flavor picked up a bit of a metallic twang that detracted a bit.. grainy, sweet ambery caramel at the core with earth, pepper, and floral bitterness surrounding.. sticky, resiny finish. Medium-bodied and (as mentioned previously) almost more of a strong red ale than an IPA.. bitterness was persistent and higher, leading to a warm, but rather refreshing finish.

Poured a clear red-copper color with a medium sized off-white head. The aroma is has some light citrus hop to it with some floral notes behind that. Mild caramel malt. Mix of malt with pine and floral hop notes. Mild bitterness on a dry finish. Light-medium bodied.

Cask. At Volo Cask Day 2006. Holy crap this is a great beer. Poured cloudy amber-orange with a small off-white head. Incredible sweet hop aroma - spruce/pine, sweet citrus & herbal, sweet juicy malt - I was actually drooling. Taste - almost as good - sweet juicy malt, variable hops per the aroma, balanced finish, ultimately a little bitter, but not at all harsh. Decent body, a little astringent, no aftertaste - elegant. Just damned good, I would drink this all the time if it were locally available.

Bottle 341 ml
Appearance: light cloudiness on dark amber red base. Mid lightly tanned head. Ring of lace.3+
Nose: Clean fresh forward hop oriented nose. Plenty of citrus, alpha acid with caramel malty bottom. Light hint of berry fruit. 8-
Flavor/Palate : Chewy bitterness , citric with touch of twig in it , amber , caramel and bit of Munich malt. Hop tartness with slight alcohol feel at far end. Substantial IPA which is rarity in this country. Solid work.
