Commercial Description:
This beer is topped with an eternally compact foam and has a wonderfully intense roasted smell with a hint of chocolate. It’s well-rounded and its taste is dominated by roasted flavours which are in symphony with a choir of hops.

TAP: Coffee and chocolate nose. Dark black color with a dark tan head. Roasted malt tastes with chocolate undertones, wood in the middle. charcoal-like bitter ened. Thinish body, but OK. The bitter builds on itself through the glass.

on tap at DdC, a deep brown, not actually black when held up to a light, the head was thick and creamy, tan colored and held up for the entire time i was drinking the other beers in my sampler (i saved this til last, then went back for 12oz glasses of my favorites). aroma was coffee and licorice, with little tones of chocolates. the flavor was opposite, with more chocolate than coffee mixing with the malts. mouthfeel was a little lite, and the bitterness from the hops that came in on the end reminded me that stouts and sweet or imp. stouts are very different beers.

Dark charred-brown body, oily looking, and with its lovely little sticky tan head, I think I may have drunk the rest of the beers in my sampler more quickly so that I could get to this one sooner. Very enticing. On draught March 2005 at the brewery. Smells of medium-roast coffee and some licorice, with a graceful element of hops in the background, nor is the subtle chocolate lost on my nose. Flavor begins with dark chocolate and strong roast overtones, moderately bitter and quite drying to start. But as it proceeds on my palate, some dark, lightly salty, rich black chocolate emerges. It’s as if I have left a piece of chocolate to liquefy in my mouth. Roasty reprise on the finish. Silky, milky creaminess, as expected, but I do have to agree with Kimchee that it thins out a bit too much on the end.

The sign on the wall was separate from the other beers. I believe that it said that it was cask conditioned. I might be wrong, I was just so excited to have found this place. It was nitrogenated which was a bit of a downer. Totally black with a thick creamy tan head. Cereal and nutty aroma. Deep and earthy with a healthy dose of coffee. Rich bittersweet chocolate. Minty herbal hops in the finish.

Draft...This beer rocks!... Who turned out the lights? I am sitting in very bright sunlight and I still can’t see through this beer. Dark as midnight durning the new Moon. It’s on nitro, so it has a large, creamy, tan head. Terrific retention with interesting, cumulus lacing. Malty, burnt aroma that is very chocolatey with notes of vanilla and toasted nuts. Tastes and feels like a dry stout to me and the 5% ABV is concurrent with that assumption. Burnt, but not overly ashen or bitter. Balanced, yet malty. Medium to full-bodied and very dry. Lengthy, burnt, moderately bitter finish. Excellent stout / dry stout!

Sampled draught at the brewpub.
Very black with creamy head. Dry and intensely roasty with coffee and chocolate. Soft, velvetty mouthfeel and lingery grassy bitter finish. Tasty and well balanced.

Large lasting light brown creamy ale. Heavy coffee and toasted malt taste. A nice smokey taste completes the finish. This beer was a perfect example of a classic stout. The body was creamy, carbonation is soft, sweetness and bitterness are very well balanced.
