Hazy pale chestnut colour, lasting beige head. Sweet aroma. Way too sweet. Don’t like maples. Too sweet even for a mead head like me. macguy (146), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Dec 25, 2009 I got a licorice blast in both the nose and on the tongue. Nice mellow brownness and the 9,5 ABV is a bonus. It might be a good beer on a cold night with an elk roast, but not my cup of malt. nuplastikk (1226), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 25, 2009 11.5oz bottle. murky, thick red-brown color underneath a fluffy off-white head. The aroma is sweet, with a touch of woody earthiness. The taste is quite maple syrupy sweet, with some mild soapy bitterness. Subtle dark fruit in the aftertaste. Almost a year old at this point if it only brewed in January, it has probably mellowed some carbonation wise,as it is a little soft. Quite complex, similar to a Wee Heavy or Doppelbock, but with that distinct Canadian Maple Syrup taste. A touch of smokiness in there as well. Quite unique, another great beer from DDC. eboats (901), Omaha, Nebraska, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 23, 2009 Aroma is alcohol, scotch, and wood. Sweet and malty with syrup. A little too sweet, but it has some smokey caramel notes. Definately a slow sipper due the high alcohol. A bit too sweet, and could use some more malt. cbeers21 (585), Miami, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 20, 2009 Whoa taste that maple syrup right off the top. Nice pour with a viscous body and leaving a decent head with good lacing. Syrupy sweetened body also gives way to an earthy distantly peaty smoked out quality and a touch of a woodsy spice. this one certainly made me stop and say "oh" wih its surprising depth in character. nicely done pumpmaster (483), Pembroke Pines, Florida, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 27, 2009 11.5 oz. Bottle from spring 2009. Poured into a snifter, it settled with a murky brown color with zero head and no discernible carbonation. Aromatics are definitely sweet and subtly complex. Nose is dominated by malt sugars and has notes of wet wood, vanilla, maple syrup and caramel. Tastes largely the same as the nose, but with a bit of banana bread and dark fruit character. No trace of hops anywhere. This actually seems to be more of a sweet brown ale in style and lacks any peat or smoky flavor typically associated with a Scotch ale. The texture of this one is thick and rests heavy on the tongue with almost no carbonation. Has a bit of alcohol heat combined with some sweet maple syrup at the end. Overall its not a bad beer, but maybe a bit too sweet.
