Dark and quite yeasty pour, with tons of sediment roiling beneath a dense cafe au lait head. Huge roasted notes in the nose, the kind of thing that immediately suggests black IPA rather than black saison. Makes sense that it’s got IS qualities, given how dense and roasted the brew is. But it’s also got an earthy, woody, almost tobacco-like finish that gives it some distinction, much needed and much enjoyed. Still tasted more like Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous than anything else, but pretty damn good even so.

Fruity-fresh and dry aroma with notes of liquorice, star anise, plums, and currants. Lasting, bubbly foam over opaque red-black. Salty and quite bitter roasted barley flavour with sweet prunes and potent, fruity esters. Moderately bitter finish with some tangy coffee. garthicus (1309), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Aroma: Coffee, chocolate, spices, lemons and oranges! Flavour: Woah! Alcohol and lots of it followed by chocolate, oak, spicy as all hell and with a long bitter coffee finish. Nice indeed. dand645 (102), Bayonne, New Jersey, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 9, 2009 Cask at Volo. Pours a dark ruby-brown, almost black, with an average size diminishing foamy tan head. Aroma of toasted grain, wheat, alcohol, wood and light hops. Very nice flavour, roasty along with alcohol, spices, wood and light hops. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Saison? I don’t know about that, but either way this is pretty awesome. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 7, 2009 A deep dark ale with reddish hues and a thin moka head. A nice floral aroma, with good c-hops, and saison funkyness, a bit of coriander and sweet oranges. In mouth, a smooth bitter chocolate over some absinthe and bitter herbs, sustained bilous hops, like a Turkish coffee with intense alcohol. On tap at brewpub Oct. 31 2009. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 2, 2009 In short: A harsh, dry, highly roasted and very hoppy strong dark ale of some kind.
How: Tap at brewpub. Batch aged 3 months
The look: Near black body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Nose is very roasted with distant notes of dark fruits. Taste is pleasantly harsh. Dirty/earthy highly roasted malts, burnt caramel, burnt black cake of some kind, generous amount leafy hops with tree barks notes. Harsh bitter finish. The beer felt rather dry but I could tell if it was because of the high roasted level or a strong attenuation. Whatever, it felt dry and I liked it. No alcohol presence whatsoever. Supposed to be an “Imperial Dark Saison” but really I would not have guessed this was a Belgian ale, much less a Saison. This beer is a collaboration between Dieu Du Ciel and a Japanese brewer. Very nice of him. Ad then he probably upgraded their web-site and reprogrammed their cash register.
