Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. The aroma is straond with coffee, but there is a nice roasted malt backbone. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, and a small amount of dark fruits stand out. On the palate, it is chewy with a nice alcohol burn. The taste really brings out the coffee, but I pick up on a tiny bit of licorice as well. It finishes smooth, leaving a nice alcohol burn all the way down. Very enjoyable.

Pours a 2 finger chocolate head. Body is pitch black in color. Head retention and lacing are good Aroma of this beer is so good. Bitter coffee and espresso are main smells, sweet chocolate also there. Vanilla and licorice come through later. First taste is of bitter iced coffee. Burnt malts then come in with some warming alcohol. Hops also are present and add some additional bitterness to the coffee. As beer warms vanilla flavor becomes apparent Mouth feel is good. Carbonation is lively, especially for an imperial stout. Body is silky smooth and head provides some creaminess Over all very good beer. Love the strong coffee flavors mixed with the sweet malt. I love stouts and this is the best I’ve ever had, could drink it everyday

Bottle from ericandersnavy. I wasn’t paying any attention to the the giant "Imperial Coffee Stout" on the bottom label. I just saw "peche" and assumed it was a lambic. I felt like an ass when it poured pitch black and my jaw hit the table. Smells like a ton of dark chocolate. Coffee flavor is very big with plenty more chocolate. Aftertaste lasts with the creamy feel.

No light can penetrate the blackness that this liquid has. Truly black. Very nice dark tan colored thick two-fingered head of dense foam. Good retention. Excellent ’curtain-like’ lacing. Not so much ’lace’, as it is more like a solid sheet of film. Excellent! Very nice hefty malt nose. A small swirl brings out notes of dark fruit. Light coffee scent is present, though not as much as expected. Big dark malts mixed with espresso shots hit you first. Chocolate notes mingle with dark fruit sweetness. An ever so light hint of vanilla kind of levels things out to a very nice balance. Very nice and silky in the mouth. Creamy smooth, yet light. Excellently drinkable. I can’t argue with so many before who have rated this brew so highly. It truly is worthy of it’s praise.

courtesy of Laurent Mousson - dark black colour with a modest head retention; roasted aroma of coffee and vanilla, some notes of nuts too; very tasty and full-bodied, very bitter and long coffeish and nutty roasted finish - a wonderful and complex beer

Pours black as night with a nice tan head into my Dogfish Head snifter. Smells like coffee/expresso, and sweet chocolate. Tastes like strong coffee stirred with milk chocolate along with a small dash of alcohol at the end. The finish on this beer is great...just like I finished a cup of freshly ground coffee or took a nice expresso shot after dinner. Mouthfeel is rich and think (but not too think for this beer) and I enjoy every sip. I will drink this beer again, no doubt. This is a great beer to end a wonderful dinner or just when you’re looking for some expresso/coffee without drinking actual expresso/coffee. A must-try.
