Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle from Knightly. Roasted espresso, dark chocoloate and nutty aroma with faint alcohol fumes. Pours very dark, practically black, with a decent tan head with some patches sticking around. Big roasty coffee flavor, slightly creamy and with a bitter edge, like drinking a premium coffee with just a dash of half/half. Some bitter unsweetened chocolate follows but I can see why this is labeled an Imperial Coffee Stout. Very well-rounded. Excellent beer.

Color is a solid black with good carbonation and a big thick brown head. Aroma is a deep rich roasted scent with back tone of coco. Taste is big and roasted. Starting with a full body it goes down smooth with a rich feel. Finish comes in sweet with deep roasted flavors and hints of toffee and chocolate then some coffee that brings up a little bitterness. After taste is dry as the roasted flavor lingers on. This is a very good Imperial Stout with big bold complex flavors.

(11.5 oz. bottle from 1828 Vintage House, cellared for 1 yr. after purchase) Pours very dark brown, appears opaque. Half a finger of biege head recedes to a thin lasting layer. Nice looking beer. Aroma of coffee and some cherry/plum. Mouthfeel is fairly smooth, perhaps lightly oily. Sturdy mouthfeel for an Imp Stout. Light sheets of lacing melt away quickly along with a light syrupy film. Dominant flavor of rich roasted coffee with more hidden notes of dark baker’s chocolate, molasses, caramel, wood and cherry. ABV well-integrated. A nice smooth-drinking Imp Stout with perhaps a bit less complexity than some.

Pours jet black with a milk chocolate head. Intense roasted coffee nose to this one. A bitterness, intense dark roast coffee and just a great beer all the way around. The alcohol is very well hidden with the other massive flavors that come to the forefront

Really nice roasted coffee (duh!) aroma with a little boozy sweetness with a nutella kind of thing going. Flavor is heavy on the roasted coffee to start, finishes with a well-rounded sweet/bitter combo. Like a tootsie roll coated in fine ground espresso. Slight alcohol warmth toward the end plays well. Really good.

How can I even begin to describe this beer? A true gem of coffee beers. While not as buzzy as others, the ABV is well noted. Its bitter chocolate coffee, also known as mana from heaven.
