yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA May 5, 2009 Péché Mortel pours pitch black with a slow forming, thick, dense, lumpy, mocha-colored head that has outstanding retention and lacing. It has a strong roasted coffee aroma. It is full bodied and very smooth with a quick finish that kind of leaves the tongue in shock. It is well bittered and very roasty. There is a slight hint of sweetness, like molasses. It’s well balanced and warming. It’s not for chugging. It took be a couple hours to get through the glass. ScottyP (314), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA May 3, 2009 Butters Big Blowout - Pours a dark brown with tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee, hint of chocolate. Taste the same, definitely felt like a nice shot of expresso. Nice bitter finish. Excellent Imperial Stout MmmcKay (269), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA May 3, 2009 Butters’ cellar blowout tasting ye hah. They’re not joking. Coffee is all over this brew in aromas and flavors. Explosive richness. Dark roasty java is all I can think of right now. Creamy. This brew does hide the alcohol well. Well well balanced for its extremity. Love it! Butters (1622), Virginia, USA May 3, 2009 Bottle shared at Butter’s Big Cellar Blowout. Black pour with wispy tan head. Nose is massive coffee, and not much else. Flavor is very similar, massively rich, with some chocolate. And a woody quality like licking a stick. This is a great coffee stout. Absolutely hidden abv, and amazing name and label. Barrios (852), Nashville, Tennessee, USA May 3, 2009 Bottle at Butters Big Cellar Blowout. Pours a tan head and a dark brown body. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, and alcohol. Finish is bitter coffee and delicious. DerWeg (748), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 3, 2009 Updated: Oct 4, 2009A rich foamy coffeeish countenance. 341 ml bottle pours a deep blackish brown with cognac edges, a thick pour with tall dense dark-tan foam that soon settles in the chalice. Smell yeast sourness over rich malt and mellow cocoa-coffee notes. Sweet-roasty-sour-coffee taste with excellent dimension and balance. Toffe malt molasses coffee... deep fruity tones are there under the coffee. Finish turns up a little dry with pretty elegant coffee and nice rounded dry hops. Languorous density and fullness.. very late vanilla on finish, great overtones. Memories of every good rich Impy I’ve ever tried, but this one has a certain integrity to the bold malty tones and the way this integrates so well with the dark roast java. Comforting and subtle for such a big bold beer, which thus makes it so very French and also leagues ahead of the plainly brazen Oaked Yeti. - ADD NOTE - cask at volo presents a bit more ash flavor, and nose. Seems to lack the same density and enveloping sexy feel. Will have to compare regular Draught tomorrow, but was disappointingly ordinaire. General66 (164), Streator, Illinois, USA May 3, 2009 11.5 ounce bottle. I must admit that I have become a pretty harsh rater for imperial stouts. I feel that one must really woo me in order to get a rating higher than a 4. This brew definitely deserves that honor. It pours a dark black color with a half finger width tan head that lingers throughout the duration of the beer. The aroma consists of coffee... and a lot of it! It may also have some hints of malt, but the coffee smell definitely masks it. The taste is also dominated by wonderful coffee hints. There is also some chocolate and roasted malts present, but is masked by the coffee again. It has a full bodied mouthfeel that leaves an excellent taste of coffee in the back of your mouth. Overall, this is an excellent brew. An absolute must-have for coffee lovers! BeerBunker (594), Burbank, Illinois, USA Apr 29, 2009 11.5oz bottle. Pours black with a foamy brown head. Aroma is of coffee, chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, and vanilla. Has a very dry and sweet aroma. Taste starts off very sweet with lots of expresso flavors and vanilla. Lots of creamy milk chocolate and some dark fruit in the taste. Has a nice caramel malt backbone that anchors the beer, and keeps it from being to overly sweet. Each sip finishes off with lots of dry, bitter roasted coffee and chocolate flavors. This beer is very well balanced, without having the coffee dominate the flavor. Mouthfeel is creamy without being too sticky. Carbonation helps, but this beer is definitely a sipper. Fantastic.
