Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

very strong coffee and chocolate aroma! deep black color with a mocha head and thick lacing. flavor starts with chocolate and ends with a heavy slightly bitter coffee taste. espresso aftertaste lingers on nicely...excellent beer!

Nice semi-chocolate head. Nice pour. The viscosity was nice looking. Pretty good looking beer; although, I would have enjoyed a darker head. The head is nice and fluffy. This beer has a great aroma. Very nice coffee aroma. Nice sweet chocolate aroma as well. This aroma is just so nice because it has many distinct smells. You can smell the roast in the background .The beer has a nice complex aroma. Also, a hint of vanilla comes through. Wow, an awesome flavor. There is that hop profile that leaves a bitter taste at the very end, but that roasted coffee flavor is everywhere. The beer also has that vanilla flavor that comes through to compliment the coffee and roast. Leaves a nice lacing, but I don’t really care about that. Nice sweet coffee taste. The palate is nice, but I disagree with most of you and think it has an average imperial stout palate. Overall, this is an awesome imperial stout. Such a strong and delicious beer that comes in such a small bottle. I would recommend this to all imperial stout lovers.

Pours an opaque black espresso color with thick rich tan colored head that dissipates. Aroma is dense to the point where not much overpowers. Aroma is roasted malts and coffee. Flavor is coffee but the flavor that comes from the rich head of the espresso. There is a thick sweetness that is present that reminds me of a caramelized brown sugar or a simple syrup. Definitely notes of bittersweet chocolate beans. The flavors blended together remind me of a rich mocha that is not taken over by sugar but deep espresso and bittersweet chocolate. Truly an intense imperial stout. Very happy with it.

pours opaque black with a thick light brown head that is as dense as they come, and seems to be sticking around, but leaves lacing as it passes. the giant notes of coffee are evident even from a distance. i don’t much care for coffee, but i love the smell, and i tend to really enjoy beers brewed with it or that smell like it (plain old roasty stouts)--with the exception of speedway. this is closer to jah va in the smell, which i appreciate. just huge hits of black coffee, tempered a little by the dark malt smells of roasted and chocolate malts. the complexity is certainly there in the smell. it’s the sort of thing you wish they made air fresheners of. the coffee notes are more subdued in the taste, which i again appreciate, though they definitely dominate. there is still a ton of roast and chocolate malt character there, and the hops seem to be primarily for bittering, as it seems to have a coffee bitterness without any hop notes. so, a lightly bitter finish, with a thick but airy, with tons of carbonation to give it that creamy but coarse feel. very well done. i like it every bit as much as jah va, which i really enjoyed. and oh so much better than speedway. great stuff.

This is 300 for me! Bought April 2008 in Philadelphia. Poured pitch black, like motor oil. Nice caramel head. Velvety and glistened on top. Nicely lacing the side of the glass the whole time. Aroma heavy of roasted coffee and malts. Taste of sweet roasted coffee. coffee hits first and subsides to oats in the end. As the beer warms in brings out more sweet caramel and vanilla notes. Warms throat as it goes down. Gives away to smooth velvety mouthfeel. Full bodies. Mild carbonation. This is the best coffee stout I have ever had!

Strong sweet vanilla citrus and coffee aromas. Some milky chocolate as well. Opaque dark brown with part foamy and party bubbly tan head. Rich iced coffee flavors, acidic bite, bitterness, dark rich malt, some dark chocolate, good long flavor duration,. Medium rich palate, not at all syrupy or overly heavy. Lively carbonation and long duration. I think this bottle was a little too fresh and it will improve with aging. Quite good.

Thanks Secret Santa! Very coffee forward aroma, so much so that I cannot pick up anything else. Not that I’m complaining. Nearly black and a sandy medium dense head with good lacing. Again, coffee everywhere. Everywhere. I’d like to see how much caffeine is in this bottle. Very tasty essence of espresso and a welcomed balance of creamy viscosity though it’s not complex or all that different, just damn good for what it is.

12 oz. bottle. Black with a big rocky light brown head and some good lace. Teh dark roast coffee is all over the aroma, perhpas to the detrimetn of some of the other aromas which reced to the background. Full body, medium carbonation, and a thick, chewy palate. The coffe flavors dominate as the aroma would predict. Bitterness from dark roasted grain, the coffee, and I guess some hops in there somewhere. I love good coffee, but this just seemed a little too one dimensional to me. Still, it is a really good beer, but not great in my opinion.
