dkachur (2318), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jul 19, 2008 From my review at cvillebeergeek.blogspot.com.
Appearance: Poured into a small tulip glass. Molasses brown pour results in a nearly opaque blackness in the glass. High level of viscosity is apparent. A small head fairly quickly vanishes to nothing. It’s not pretty, but it is very inviting. 4.0/5.0
Aroma: Very complex. Bitter and sweet coffee is at the forefront of the aroma along with notes of smoke, tobacco and chocolate. Smoke and tobacco? Yes, the aroma does come dangerously close to a coffee and cigarettes, but it works. Very full and satisfying aroma... the kind you can smell for hours. 4.5/5.0
Taste: Very nice. Smooth coffee flavor with more tobacco and some leather and cream. Now we’re at coffee with cream and cigarettes! Still good though. Chocolate notes from the aroma almost disappear but are there faintly, as well as smoke and caramel notes. And the alcohol, high as it is, is completely absent. 4.25/5.0
Mouthfeel: This has a very full feel to it. And it’s creamy, very creamy, and silky too. This feels nice. 4.45/5.0
Drinkability: A very smooth beer, but it’s largesse and it’s 9.5% abv means it is not to be taken lightly. Still, it is an extraordinarily pleasant beer. 4.5/5.0
Overall: Sadly this is not available in our area. Hopefully that will change someday soon. If it does, $5.49 for an 11.5 ounce bottle is not a bad price for such an outstanding beer. Very smooth and incredibly tasty, this is one for the ages. Also, "Mortal Sin" is a very nice name for a beer. 4.4/5.0 bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Jul 18, 2008 Bottle from Bottle Trek. Very black color with a tan head that left rapidly. Aromas of coffee and darkly toasted malt. More or less medium body with fizzy/creamy carbonation. The flavor is really dark toasted/burnt malt (but smooth) with something approaching espresso. With time, chocolate notes come forth. Finish is a little bit sweet, and there’s not much bitter other than the burnt malt. Overall, it’s a heck of a drink. Every taste is a fresh experience. It may be the same one over and over, but who cares. jcr (1137), Jasper, Indiana, USA Jul 18, 2008 Bottle. Rich, roasted coffee bean aroma carries through the aroma to the flavor. Black body with ruby highlights in the body. Thick, fizzy head that lasts and lacing that coats the side of the glass. The aroma is dominated by the coffee and chocolate with notes of roasted and burnt malts and vanilla. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately bitter and mildly acidic. Dry, coffee bitterness in the finish. Tastes of unsweetened dark chocolate linger along with the alcohol. Medium body with a velvety texture and lively carbonation. You could say this is a one-trick pony kind of beer — all coffee all the time — but that one trick is pretty good. SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA Jul 17, 2008 11.5oz beer: Viscous black pour with a thick, mocha colored head. The aroma offers a beautiful balance of sweet chocolate and roasted coffee - working together well. The coffee is slightly more bitter in the body, working with the lightly bitter hops. Lots of fudge, bittersweet chocolate, vanilla beans follow. Finishes with a scorched java note. Very good. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Jul 15, 2008 black pour with a thick espresso head. nothing but bold coffee on the nose. slight chocolate flavor in the finish and a huge roasted coffee flavor upfront. it went very well with the brownie i was having as well. daknole (2805), Plantation, Florida, USA Jul 15, 2008 Updated: Feb 2, 2009Thanks to bitbucket!!! Pours a nice black color with a small brown head that sticks to the glass with each sip. Aroma is purely coffee and bitter chocolate. Flavor is coffee, burnt malts, bitter dark chocolate and some hops. It is smooth and full bodied. I do taste some of the alcohol, but not too much of a burn. Very nice brew indeed. Glad I finally got to try it!! walleye (876), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Jul 13, 2008 From the 12 oz bottle. Poured adark brown with a nice big brown head. Aroma mild coffee, raosted malts, dark fruits, molasses, chocolate. Flavor same as a aroma, the alcohol is nice and smooth. good beer Palidor19 (1750), Brandon, Florida, USA Jul 13, 2008 Nice and strong, lots of flavor of coffee and high caramel flavor, one of the better imperial stouts with great flavors. slightly smokey and lots of cocoa.
