easement (4), USA does not count Jun 17, 2008 Notes of coffee and vanilla in the smell. Coffee comes in at the end. Lingering bitterness. Head for days and stays the entire drink. Very nice lacing. I don’t know how they manged to have so much head retention with all of the coffee oils. This is my new favorite coffee stout. MrChopin (621), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 17, 2008 Pours black with puffy tan head. Nose has strong coffee and vanilla. Flavor is similar with burnt coffee overload and sweet chocolate in the aftertaste. A little dry (hops? yeah right) and incredibly salty, this is a smooth, creamy beer. While I really enjoy it, I wish it wasn’t so one-sided. Trev (850), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Jun 16, 2008 Bottle from Apple Valley Liq:
Pours very dark black with a medium tan head. Slow fade and nice lacing.
Chocolate and coffee aroma, Roasted malt and some dark fruit tones.
Flavour is coffee coffee coffee, dark roast malt body with a milky sweetness at first, nice balancing bitterness combines burnt malt, light alc. and bitter chocolate tones.
Very drinkable, well balanced...no sticky alc or in your face hop like some other Imp. Stouts. elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Jun 16, 2008 Updated: Oct 14, 2008Coffee-stout lovers dream. Aroma is heavy of ground coffee beans, charcoal, and roasts. Palate is oily, thick, and lightly carbonated. I can’t get over how powerful the role of coffee is in shaping the complexion of this beer. Other than that, malt and roasts serve to "balance" out the flavor, adding depth and tastiness. Finishes quite bitter, of coffee, with a bit of alcohol, and long, long, long. Save yourself the shock and only drink this when you are feeling up for a potent blend of black espresso and and Impy stout. Oh, lastly, Peche Mortel gets exponentially more delicious as it warms . . . LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Jun 15, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a thick tan head that persists somewhat. Aroma of coffee, roasted and sweet malt. Aroma is weak (not as in not strong, just not very rich and robust). However, the flavor is a bit richer: lots and lots of burnt coffee (even stronger than in the aroma), bitter roasted malt, and peanut brittle. Strong, thick mouthfeel for a 9.5%. Not my favorite coffee stout (Beer Geek Breakfast is more balanced, less bitter and roasted), but still quite enjoyable and a very interesting beer to drink. Definitely try this one, it is quite unique! MatSciGuy (627), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Jun 15, 2008 [Bottle] Pours a dark, dark viscous brown with a finger of deep tan head. Aroma is a bit of coffee and some bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is primarily coffee and roasted barley, with not too much else. Quite bitter, dry finish, and it lingers for quite a while after your last sip. Very good, but I don’t quite think this is a top 50 beer. larsga (2937), Oslo, Norway Jun 15, 2008 Medium dark brown lasting head. Opaque black body. Intense thin and sharp mealy aroma of pine needles, juniper, and coffee with burnt oily notes. Dry intense burnt coffee taste with milky chocolate notes. Taste is surprisingly mild after the punch of the aroma. Dry juniper coffee aftertaste leaves long dry lingering chocolate taste. Very, very good! A great beer. (0.341l bottle from gr0ve.) KAF (441), Coralville, Iowa, USA Jun 14, 2008 11.5 oz. bottle from Heritage Liquor in Maplewood. Deep rich dark brown pour with a finger thick creamy tan head that disipates slowly. Slight lacing. Fresh crushed coffee bean flavor with hints of vanilla and faint smoked charcoal. Very faint dark fruit on the nose as well. A slight touch of bubble gum on the front of the taste with a nice bitter coffee. More clear indication of dark fruits. Dry finish on the back roof of the mouth.
