crizay (1050), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA May 15, 2008 Black pour, small brown head. Aroma is well coffee. Flavor is the same this is a straight coffee bean as if you were chewing it, it’s semi sweet and espresso like but it just comes down to it tasting like the coffee beans were boiled right in and then aged on them to top it off. Full bodied, good carbonation and a slick mouthfeel but with intense coffee bitterness. Really a nice coffee beer if you love a big brutal coffee but it does get to be a bit too much, overall it’s still a nice beer once in a while. Tmoney99 (4656), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA May 15, 2008 Bottle from fiver29. Poured black color with a large brown frothy head that mostly lasted with . Moderate to heavy roasted coffee and dark chocolate aroma. Medium smooth body. Good complex combo of sweet coffee and bitter chocolate with a moderate to heavy roasted bittersweet finish that was strong and lasting. This is a standout brew. sayravai (3720), Helsinki, Finland May 15, 2008 (Bottled) Almost black with a small, lacy and beige head. Extremely strong ashtray aroma with some licorice, but no alcohol. Burned-malty, very ashy flavor with tar, seaweed, and an ashy-sticky barley wine finish. Quite full-bodied, smooth-carbonated palate. It is strange how a beer so ashy can actually be this pleasant. Beautifully crafted! Sparky27 (1559), Phoenix, Arizona, USA May 14, 2008 #200! Bottle courtesy of GMCC2181.
Pours a pitch black with one finger tan head. Nose is chocolate, espresso, cocoa and burnt coffee grounds. Palate is dark chocolate, French roast coffee, roasted barley and espresso with a slight hoppy bitterness in the finish. Lots of dark chocolates and coffee, both of which I really like. Creamy mouth feel with nice lacing. Alcohol is well hidden in this slow sipper. A very good impy stout that’s worthy of its lofty reputation. Thanks again Gabe!
iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA May 13, 2008 I’ve had this many times, but now I have my own 12oz, no date from beerbuzzmontreal for myself. Eventually I’ll get around to putting in past reviews. Deep brown--black in the glass--with a small tan head, fading to a thick ring and thin film. The strongest aroma here is coffee, and anise comes next (as far as picking up aromas goes). Plenty of roasted malts and baker’s chocolate with some sweet brown sugar is noted. Flavor is drier and less sweet than the aroma had led on--not that it really smelled that sweet anyway. Scorched coffee and roast are up front with some anise again. The finish is dry and slightly ashy with some warming alcohol noted and bitterness peaking around a 3. Light prickly carbonation with a medium body. I remember the bombers of this being quite a bit better--maybe I’m wrong. unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA May 13, 2008 9.5%ABV. 12oz bottle. Aroma is ashy, coffee, and even some jalapeño aromas. Wow, lots of coffee flavors. Rich, over roasted coffee flavors. Burnt! Bitter coffee ground finish. Very different, very good. not sure of the high score though. Petrucci914 (574), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA May 12, 2008 Pours a pitch black with a large frothy chocolate head that fades somewhat quickly. Aroma is coffee roasts with sweet caramel and vanilla notes. The taste is burnt coffee grounds with a bitter finish.
A bit too harsh all around. Maybe aging it would make it mellow and creamier. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA May 11, 2008 This was one of the greatest beers I have had. I really enjoyed the harshness of the roastyness in this one. The coffee is burned too much and acidic tasting like dirt-extract. I can’t see myself drinking more than three of these, but imperial stouts aren’t a style I penalize too much for lower drinkability because even the great ones I get sick of after three or four due to their heaviness. There was a light fruit flavor in the beer too, uncharacteristic of the style, almost like fresh oranges. This was one very different beer, incredibly harsh but so well done I was shocked with every sip I took.
