Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

First time I have tasted-rated the bottled version: Pours darker than a taxman’s heart, Smallish tight mocha cap - decent lace. Aroma has all the character of the draft product; big roastiness - coffee-cocoa- figs...very lush. Thick, oily mouth feel, big whack of roast coffee over cocoa-roast grain notes in the front, light dried fruit notes, rich oatmeal body.....finish is long and drying with increasing bittering. No hint of alcohol. Not a complex impy but extremely intense, rich and satisfying. Unique.

Reviewed 9/12/2009 (bottle): Pours an extremely dark brown color body, with a small tan brown head, diminishing. Strong aroma of coffee, espresso. All I get is the coffee. Very carbonated, strong coffee taste, biting. Might be the alcohol. Alcoholy aftertaste for sure. Roasted taste. A little too strong coffee and not much else for my liking.

Bottle. The color was completely black, the head was brown and looked very creamy. The wonderful aroma was dominated by coffee there was also some chocolate, roasted malt tones and even a touch of vanilla. A huge dose of coffee in the taste but also some chocolate and roasted malt, as in the aroma. The beer was really nicely balanced. Full-bodied, a little greasy feeling at the liquid and a long and pleasant aftertaste. Very nice!

Deeeep black colour, thin brown head and a thick lacing on the glass. Aroma is full of coffee, coffee, ashes, tar almost like an ash tray, but in a good way. Flavour is also dominated by coffee, is extremely unbalanced and acidic so much so that it makes it fantasticly interesting and also demanding. Mouthfeel is smooth, just smooth. One word Ashes!

Pours the darkest brown color possible with a massive brown head. Aroma is a blend of espresso and dark chocolate. Taste is the same, starting with the bitter coffee flavor, blended with a bit of vanilla, but finishing with a dark, hershey bar flavor.

A spectacular blend of espresso and an excellent stout. Strong coffee aroma... it almost sends an alarm where you think they may have overdone it. But drinking it clears any doubts; the balance is perfect. Mighty dark and complex appearance. Has nice feel to it, with the perfect level of thickness and carbonation to go with the rest of the beer. Very impressive.

Bottle. Strong coffee aroma. Big tan head that diminishes slowly. Black and almost opaque. I have never seen a beer this dark. Taste is sweet and very alcoholic, with huge coffee flavour. Mouthfeel is about right. I like this beer, I just didn’t dig the coffee taste.

341ml bottle bought from the local dep. It pours a deep black with a thin head. The nose is a chocolate/coffee which is not unpleasent. The taste is medium bitterness with a malt chocolate after taste. The mouth feel is oily with soft carbonation and a long finish. Over all a nice beer, but not something i would drink on a regular basis.
