Super dark roasted used coffee grounds aroma with a hint of dark rich malt chocolate and some juicy fruit. Black brown body with a quick creamy light tan head. Coffee flavour is rich and smooth and dark with a hint of smooth chocolate. Full body has a nice light bitterness. Very nicely balanced. tupalev (2618), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 16, 2006 Aug 05 bottle shared with GregClow, Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and Jerc - thanks Paul, this has been on my must try list for some time! Tons of coffee, some vanilla in very sweet and pleasing aroma. Pitch black, medium sized beige head. Very sweet taste. So much coffee! Bitterness seems derived from the coffee, not the hops. Long lingering roast finish. Lives up to the hype - I’ve been to Dieu De Ciel twice, I can’t wait for this to be on tap one of these days! ChainGangGuy (2616), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 9, 2008 Appearance: Pours a black body topped by a thin, short-lived tan head.
Smell: Ashen aroma of spent coffee grounds with some supporting notes of dark malts and semi-sweet chocolate.
Taste: Moderately sweet dark malts yield to a blast of roasty coffee and earthy bitterness. Hint of anise. The coffee flavor starts to take on a distinct burnt quality. Ashy finish. The alcohol is well hidden, I will give it that.
Mouthfeel: A bit beyond medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Instead of chiming in with a half-snotty remark, let’s just say it’s "alright" and leave it at that. Pailhead (2610), Allen Park, Michigan, USA

Tons of roasted coffee in the aroma, and I mean tons. Pours a dark brown, virtually black, with a nice tan head. Some lacing short of a 5 appearance. Tons of roasted coffee in the flavor with barely a touch of cream and even lighter chocolate. Reminds me a little of Breakfast Stout, but not quite as good.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 6, 2005 Thanks Chuck! Pours to a thick black body with a beige head that has AWESOME lacing. All I can say about the aroma is HOLY FUCK. The aroma is dark espresso, a little dark chocolate hides under the huge coffeeness. The flavor is a casky coffee with light grass hops. Alcohol hides well but is still noticeable. The flavor is pretty good but there are better tasting impy’s. The palate is bitter and thick and creamy but has a touch too much carbonation. It’s very lively on the tongue. Bockyhorsey (2556), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Black body color with tan head and good amount of lacing. Chocolate flavor along with roasted coffee and some dry coco. Dryness on the palate that coco lingered abit. Thanks Craig. pivo (2537), Germany
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 19, 2005 2003 Bottle: Fresh coffe aroma emerges quickly on this one, turning woody and even to characoal as I swirled the glass. Jet black - like motor oil - with a tan head. Amazingly heavy, sweet deep roasted malt body giving off hints of black cherry, wood, chocolate and coffee. Espresso-like finish. Complex, but the coffee is countered and balanced with sweet flavors so this all comes together just perfectly. Slight boost of all the flavors from the alcohol, which is rather in the background. Thanks MartinT and tiggmtl for enjoying this with me. Can’t say enough good things about this beer. kramer (2524), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 5, 2006 22 oz bottle, via SecretSanta pdee. Pours pitch black with a fluffy light brown 2 finger head that left tons of lacing. Rich espresso aroma is just over the top! Dark roasted malt with some vanilla, cocoa, and bourbon as well. Chocolate and coffee flavor up front with vanilla and alcohol. Finish is very warming but slightly astringent as well. Very nice mouthfeel, full bodied and chewy with very light carbonation that prevents an overly cloying feel. Pretty awesome stuff. I was actually expecting a little more coffee but it actually tastes a little subtle. Alot more emphasis on the roast.
