Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a huge foamy head with excellent retention and some nice lacing notes. Aroma consists of espresso type coffee with some notes of black chocolate. Taste is a well balance mix between some sweet and roasted malt with a dominant taste of espresso coffee with some notes of black chocolate. Very well balance overall with a full body and a creamy texture. Not cloying or overly dry in any way and alcohol is not apparent.

bottle from Beer Store. Black with a fizzy off white head. Smells like coffee and chili (oddly enough), thick sticky palate with a big coffee taste, chocolate, mild chili, and finishing with more coffee. Decent.

Courtesy McBackus. Pours a deep, dark, chocolate brown body with a small, fizzy, coffee colored head. Minimal spotty lacing emerges from the thin film that settles at the top. The aroma is big and rich, showing espresso, baker’s chocolate, dark fruits, and some cola. The nose is very roasty and inviting. The flavor shows coffee, coffee, and more coffee, but its very creamy, not bitter. Dark chocolate plays a big role, as do floral hops. The body is quite full and smooth. Very easy to drink, despite the big ABV. Finishes rich and roasty. Awesome brew. I’m glad I have a few more to drink.

Pour is opaque black with thick brown head...this was disappointingly unimpressive...nose was coffee, and only coffee...the mouthfeel was thin and the only thing going on here at all was coffee...

341ml bottle thanks Glouglouburp for this top 50 brew! pours pitch black with small fizzy off white head. not much of a head at all as its just fizzy around the rim. nose of burnt coffee, ashy, dark fruits. flavor of harshly burnt ashy coffee with dark chocolate. some dark fruits finish it out as everything lays flat on the palate. the ashy burnt flavor hits big while the dark chocolate comes quick and doesnt last. quickly everything fades into almost nothing just leaving an ash tray finish. i wouldn’t be surprised if they boil coffee with the beer as it seems extremely burnt and harsh. the carbonation is pretty fizzy while the feel is too thin. alcohol isn’t noticed though. the burnt flavor in this just kills it and makes this nothing special.

Dark, almost black. Has a beige head, mostly lasting. Aroma has coffee, malt. And some unpleasent yeasty notes. Flavor is heavy sweet, coffee. Syrup texture.

From Skjold Burne, Aarhus, DK. Bottled, 010808. Black with a brownish head. Aroma of choclate and coffee. Flavor is complex of roastes and malt sweetness with notes of smoke, liqourice, coco and red fruits.

Thanks to slob for hooking me up with this one. Huge coffee aroma and flavor, however, it was overly carbonated, IMO, pouring w/ a huge head. The mouthfeel had a bit too much fizz. Very dry and just simply a big coffee stout. I’m not a big fan of coffee, per se, so this one isnot quite up my alley.
