Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Thanks axilla. Side by side tasting of 2004 and 2005 bottles. The 2004 was a gusher, the 2005 was not. Translucent, dark rusty brown body with a minimal tan head after all the gushing. Aroma is of roasted coffee beans and day old coffee with a sour note. Nice chocolate-espresso flavor with a well-roasted character and some light acidity. A nice, full-flavored and tasty coffee stout. Fizzy, overcarbonated mouthfeel. Begs to be flattened out. I can understand why the nitro version seems to be preferred. I imagine this would be sublime on cask. Differences between the two vintages were relatively minor, the 2005 just seemed slightly darker and richer with a fresher coffee aroma. I like Speedway in the bottle much better.

Bottle. Huuuuge beany coffee aroma, dominating all else, with chocolate. Have to give it to them, they live up to their boast - one of the most coffee-centric stouts out there. Soul-sucking black with a large dark brown head, dense and creamy, quiet, lacing and rocky. Taste of sultry dark chocolate, very dry roast malt but not before the rich, sweetly sticky beany chocolate has its way. Thickly malty (though I’ve had Doppelbocks that were fatter; this is more medium-bodied) with a little alcohol showing but no burn. Creamy-smooth. Light bitterness picks up a bit toward the aftertaste. A sure thing, but not a top-5 impy.

Courtesy of Matta @ Denverlogan’s GABF 05 Party. Why I had to go to Denver to sample a beer brought from a guy just across town I have no idea!
Extremely one dimensional. I mean ridiculously so, but there is still beer in this and that is where many coffee infused stouts go wrong.
HUGE coffee aroma with hints of quality milk chocolate. Deep black with a firm fluffed up head. Bitter acidic coffee fore with some mild creaminess and an esspresso finish.

Deep opaque brown/black body, medium/thick light tan head. Strong roasted coffee aroma, with charred malts, licorice, and Mounds bars. Acrid, acidic dry roasted coffee and baker’s chocolate dominate the body. I couldn’t get over how bitter and dry this stout was. Hints of licorice poked through the prickly coffee from time to time. Biting carbonation. Strong, bitter finish with notable alcohol. Becomes smoother over time, but not what I expected; the aroma outshines the flavor and palate.

I knew I was going to the Montreal RBSG since they announced it as the location, so I have avioded all bottled versions of this beer. I’m glad I did. I was all set to blast this beer as not worth the hype, but in fact, on tap at the pub, it is everything they say it is. It was on the nitro tap when we were there, and it came to the table in the middle of an incredibly beautiful cascade that ended up in about a half inch of creamy tan foam head. This is a very dark beer with ruby sparkles around the edge of the tulip when held up to the light. The nose is like chocolate coffee ice cream. Such a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Lots of coffee flavors, like roasted espresso beans. Sweetened coffee, chocolate, vanilla, some ash and chalk. The finish is just an incredibly pleasant drifting bitter coffee/sweet chocolate sensation. It is all so well balanced. It is a complete drinking experience.
