Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

On draft at DDC RBSG. The nitro tap produced a glass of down cascading foam that slowly transformed itself into a deep black body under a rich creamy foam head that lasted for well over an hour, maybe longer. I nursed on this for the entire night and it never failed. Heavy malt aroma with dark chocolate and strong coffee. Moderately sweet with just the right amount of bitterness, the flavor was near perfect. Well balanced, strong but not cloying, extremely well done. Worthy of all the superlatives that have been used for the description of this beer. Whether you choose to sip on this one for hours or drink it as a session beer, it won’t disappoint you if you love a good Stout.

12oz. bottle. Dry, roasty, intensely coffeeish aroma, toasty and dark, full of incredibly dark chocolate malts and smoky notes, charry, woody and earthy. Dark brown-black in color with a lasting, fine, light tan head, some dustings of sediment visible. Flavor is very nicely balanced between the coffeeish dryness and dark malt sweetness, plenty of roast combined with lighter dark, dried fruit qualities, espresso and blackened char. Palate is smooth, creamy and ultimately dry. Body is correspondingly full, yet remaining very drinkable with a pretty incredible finish, showing a true depth of coffee flavor. Thanks to John Bryan for this!

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a large dark brown head that lingered. The aroma was full with sharp floral hops, loads of cocoa and moderate vanilla, malted mild and toasty malts. The flavor was very malty and toasty with strong notes of malted milk, vanilla and cocoa and touches of port wine and cherry. The finish was long and toasty with floral hops, port wine, cocoa and vanilla touches lingering. The body was thick and full. Some alcohol shows through on the flavor but the richness of the brew offsets this pretty well. Excellent.

From a 12 ounce bottle from Belmont Station in Portland, OR--Poured a dark brown-black body with a thick whitish head. Massive coffee and chocolate nose. Sticky, thick, and bomby. Very rich and gritty. Chewy and heavy. This beer is more than all about coffee.

Bottle, thanks to after4ever. Pours opaque black with a fluffy, lacy tan head. Big aroma of brewed coffee. Medium body, light carbonation. Coffee and dark fruit taste, then a touch of caramel kicks in. Dry pine and espresso finish, a little chalky. I was kind of underwhelmed by this one.

fumes of roastiness and scorched wood with thin scents of semi-fermented peach or nectarine and a touch of coffee and banana. Dark pour w/dark head. Chewy and roasty with dark chocolate flavors and slight tanginess. Certaintly quite roasty and nutty too. Not overly impressed though.

341ml bottle, no idea where this came from. Pours opaque with a tan head that fell similar to a brew that had nitro pushing it. awesome aromas of fresh coffee, plum, raisin, and licorice. One of the best beers of the year for me.
