Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

It’s coffee in a glass! Pours very dark with a big, puffy head. Smells like, not surprisingly, coffee, but it’s not incredibly overpowering. Flavor tastes, not surprisingly, of coffee, but there’s at least some beer-ness in here competing with the one-dimensional coffee character. Nice malty sweetness at the end plus a bit of smoke makes this actually decent, and I don’t even like coffee.

12 oz bottle, thanks to gunhaver. Shared with NachlamSie and BossHossBikes. Pours black with mahogany edges and an everlasting tan head. Aroma is obvious coffee and dark malt, some prune, chocolate, and black cherry. The flavor is strong coffee, and good coffee at that. Black cherry, bitter chocolate, raisin and prune are in there, too. But the emphasis is definitely coffee. Slight acidity comes out in the finish. This is a seriously good beer. You gotta like coffee to enjoy it, though. It so happens that I enjoy coffee.

Special thanks to Patricia for this draft sample: poured pitch black with a massive rocky brown head. Very strong coffee, cherry, chocolate aroma. Mild alcohol in the nose. Big roasted malt and coffee taste. There is no doubt this is a coffee stout. Light sweetness up front followed by the bitter coffee finish. This is the new batch (April 2005) and I must say it is excellent..

Solid, opaque and medium viscosity with a thin, foamy tan head. Nice whole bean French roast coffee aroma, tire rubber, black currant, cherry pits and unsweetened chocolate. A little too much carbonation up front, but gently subsides with an intensely bitter coffee profile. Medium bodied, clinging to the enamel. Dark, unsweetened confectionary chocolate slabs and a powdery mocha trait titillates the tongue. Quite the example of how far you can go with coffee and dark chocolate in the imperial sense. Thanks to JCapriotti for sharing this!

I’ve had this several times now. I’ve rerated it several times as well. The final rating (for now) is a draft example from the brewpub. Black pour, darker tan head. Aroma is a delicate balance of coffee beans with the usual dark malts you find in a stout. Moderate to low hopping. Extremely silky smooth, rich coffee flavors. Amazing balance, but not a monstrous imperial. Still world class IMO.

Bottle. Big thanks to Hog Town Harry for this one. Huge coffee, roasty aroma. Had to sip this one not sure when I’ll get another. Beautiful black pour. Body is a bit lighter than I expected with the full huge aroma. Flavors of coffee, cocoa, Chocolate, light bitterness are meld together beautifully. Great beer

Many thanks to Wunderbier. As Iceman said this is 1984 Michael Jackson....never mind. Well it had a nice appearance. Do you like Espresso? If you say yes you may cream your.....never mind. If not you may be looking for something else. A very bitter chocolate and coffee taste. You need not seek complexity here just a coffee house. Is this beer overrated? Oh yes. But is it good? Yes also. Starbucks beer style homies....

Thick black pour with thick creamy head and wonderful lacing! Espresso on the nose, with hints of chocolate, cream, and roast on the mouthfeel. finish’s dry with a blast of coffee! Thanks to papat444 for this gem!
