Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

22’er. Black color. Thick, creamy head. Moderately aromatic, mainly just pure dry coffee grounds and perhaps a touch of vinous fruits and chocolate. In terms of the flavor, there isn’t much besides the coffee addition. It’s substancial enough to still retain loads of flavor, but its devoid of anything close to malt complexity and the body and texture is definately lacking as well.

An outstanding imperial stout. I’ve grown tired of these for the most part, but every once in a while one will slap me. This did that. Strong thick coffee aroma with dark chocolate in there as well. Pour was a perfect near black with a pillowy dense 4 finger tan head. Taste was more choclate than coffee in my opinion with a strong bitter roasted malt aftertaste. Very nice.

Pour is a thick black with a small tan head. Aroma is a extremly roasted malt with lots of coffee and some follow up alcohol. Flavor is intense coffee with again loads of roasted malt and strong dark chocolate. Finish leaves a roasted quality all over the palate. Pretty expensive at $5 a bottle but this is a tasty treat especially if you like your coffee strong and black.

Black with a foamy, brown head. Aroma is of coffee! Reminds me of hunting with my Grandfather. Sour and bitter. Tobacco and bourbon come to mind as well. The flavor has a strong roast malt as well as coffee qualities. Bitter, but good. Some fruitiness to it, some alcohol and some chocolate. The body is thick and huge. Creamy palate though. Sits in the belly like a lump lead. I would have to say I liked this one.

22 oz bottle, many thanks to slob for this goodie! Pours black and opaque with a creamy tan head - this one just looks good in the glass. Aroma features coffee, chocolate, molasses, lots of roasty notes and more coffee. Flavor again shows off the coffee, roasty, sweet maltiness with a nice balancing tanginess on the tongue, leather, earth and bitter chocolate. Full, creamy mouthfeel - very smooth. Nice treat, thanks Bert!

(Bottled Nov 2004) Very large light brown head from a way to vigorous pour. Quite unattractive head of all different sized bubbles from very small to very large. Big and frothy. Decent carbonation for an imperial stout. Lots of coffee in the aroma with dark malts, roasted grains and a bit of bitter chocolate. Maybe a little of french vanilla also. Color is essentially black. Lively in the mouth and remains free flowing. Not as thick as I would have expected. Plenty of coffee, smoke and a little bit of sweetness. Bitterness of dark chocolate in the background. Pretty complex. Finish is roasty with a lingering aftertaste of bitter coffee. I am NOT a coffee fan but this one is pretty smooth and mellow yet very powerful. Alcohol is hidden very well. A very good imperial stout. I can understand why people go bonkers over this one.

Pours black into an English pint. Bitter coffee and malt aromas. Dark mocha colored head. Coffee and sweet malt. Crisp. Lasting espresso finish.

Very dark color, with a thick creamy beige tan-colored foamy head, with a complex nose of vanilla, cacao, expresso, burnt coffee beans, mocha, dark chocolate and roasted malt aroma follows through on a medium to full bodied palate, very smooth and luscious, with black coffee, vanilla, mocha, burnt toasts, roasted coffe beans flavors leading to a bitter-sweet chocolate accent in a voluptuous thin alcoholic warmth soft bitter hop finish.
