Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle. Pours near black with a tan head. Coffee/espresso aroma, with dark chocolate and floral hop notes. Medium/full body. Flavor is roasted malt and coffee beans, with a light smoky note. Also has fruit and dark chocolate. Finished with a lingering bitterness from both floral hops and roasted malt. Very nice.

11.5 fl oz (twist off, really?) bottle from Bottleworks in Seattle, WA, via after4ever. No dates marked on the bottle, but I am fairly certain this is the fresh batch. Pour is deep black, with a thick, two inch deep tan head. Nice lacing left behind as the head falls. This is a pretty beer. Aroma of smoky roasted coffee, and perhaps some milkiness. Taste follows the nose closely, charred roast coffee and the milkiness. The milkiness is a bit chalky in the taste. There is also some almost piney sweetness in the taste as well. Palate is full and mouth coating. Nicely done beer. Thanks for grabbing this one at BW for me, Tom.

Foam climbs out of the bottle upon opening. Pours with a medium sized tan/brown head, fair retention and a solid sheet of lacing around my glass. Black, opaque brew. You like coffee? Strong, roasty coffee? This baby is dominated by roast, coffee flavors in the appearence, flavor and aroma. Aroma is fresh ground beans. Flavor is as a strong black cup of joe with faint vinous notes and bittersweet chocolate. Nicely roasty, bold and big, lightly acidic. This is one chewy concoction. Sweetness is balanced by the roast, coffe bitterness. Finish is dry, roasty and coffee laden. If you like big coffees you,ll enjoy this brew. Very cool!

BOTTLE READS 11/04:first off i have to give MUCH thanks to footbalm for hooking me up with this rare brew.im am very excited to rate this coffee stout.i popped the top and dumped a few ounces into my courvoisier snifter glass.the body was super black,so black that i held a flashlight up to the glass and saw no light what so ever.i got a nice 1/2 inch dark brown head that left thick webbing on the snifter as it sat down.my nose was greeted with a lovely balance of coffee, coco, roasted malts, chocolate, and s’mores.i put the glass up to my lips and took the first sip.roasted coffee, malts, alcohol, fudge, and a tiny bit of "burnt" flavor at the end.the mouthfeel was nice and thick, with a bit of a bite at the end.overall this is very nice as expected, and as it warms, the bite mellows out a bit.supurb stuff indeed. 2005 re-rate of a 2004 bottle.flavors have melted together a bit but the sharp carbonation/burnt coffee is still there.maybe it needs more time to mellow. (RE-RATE:MAY 2005 BOTTLE ON AUG. 11TH OF 06)i must say the 05 blows the 04 out of the water.the bitter coffee/carbonation is gone.its smooth coffee and chocolate.nice lacing on the glass from the dark brown head as well.i can see why this was hyped up so much now.

Bottle Pours out pitch black topped with a cream tan head. Aroma of coffee, rich roast malts, and some sweetness. Tast was more of the coffee and plenty of rich roast. A nice dark chocolate and some pit fruit on the end.

Newest batch - Pours a nice looking black color with a tan head. Aroma is roasty, creamy, chocolatey - and most of all packs a coffee wallop. Flavor is big and roasty with lots of tasty coffee, some cream, and a bit of chocolate. Full bodied with a nice finish - very good, but not one of the "top" Imperial stouts, nor coffee stouts in general IMHO. I’ll take a Founder’s Breakfast any day over this, though this is good (though not all that much value for the $)

Huge thanks to BuckNaked for a top 50 as a throw in!!! Pours dark oily black. decent beige head. Aroma and flavor is all straight bitter black coffee. Which i am not a fan of. Sorry. Scores decent just can’t drink it.

Bottle courtesy of HogtownHarry, thanks a lot for this one Harry! Dark, black liquid poured from the 12 oz bottle, and left a frothy, creamy, mocha head that lasted. In the nose, I got freshly brewed black coffee, rich dark chocolate, some vanilla, with a touch of wood smoke and hops. The flavour profile was quite enjoyable to me, as I love coffee. Fresh dark roast with loads of bittering hops, vanilla, dry, bitter dark chocolate, some smoke. Bitter with long lived coffee aftertaste. Creamy, and very drinkable considering the ABV. Quite a treat. Thank you Harry! :)
