Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

12oz bottle for breakfast on Christmas morning 2008 (hell yeah). A nice RIS - not the best but very good. Black and heavy with a two-finger brown head. Strong coffee/roasted malt aroma. Flavor is lots of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and alcohol on the finish. Palate is pretty thick, not quite as heavy as some "extreme" RISes.

Pours a rather opaque black color with a thick and creamy tan head. Great lacing. Aroma is at once strongly alcoholic and full of dark-roast. I also picked up notes of brown sugar. Rich and slightly chocolatey coffee flavor is a true joy to sip on. Coffee lingers for minutes on my tastebuds after every sip. A slight overcarbonation keeps the palate from being perfect but doesn’t really hinder my enjoyment of this beer. I highly suggest that people send this beer to me daily so that I can further analyze it.

Dark brown body, enduring tan head. Dry coffee and cherry aroma. Flavor is bitter coffee, strange roasted peach fruit. I swear it was peach, not because of the name of the beer. Great beer overall, but it seemed like too much coffee presence. Rerate, Batch 2, 11/26/2005. "Coffee is only the beginning". Man, this beer is about the coffee, but there is so much more. It seems perfectly balanced with a fruity caramelly sweetness, creamy sweet vanilla with irish cream hints. Roasty dunkelweizen-like banana. Chocolate vanilla bourbon show up in the nose.

Bottle, thx to NoiZe. Pitch black colour, tan head. Aroma has bitter chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Flavour has initially bitter coffe, but gets smoother with roasted malts. Long lasting aftertaste of bittersweet chocolate malts. Impressive!

Pours deep brown with no head. The nose is coffee, pepper, chocolate and vanilla. The flavor is the same along with some earthiness. Tons of complexities. A true experience.

bomber bought at Blue Max in Minneapolis (last one on the shelf too!). black as night, impervious to light. head is light brown thick and really creamy. aroma is obviously dominated by the coffee with a sugary lactose quality and maybe a bit of mustiness. flavor is strong on the coffee with a bit of a tongue-numbing sensation. alcohol is barely perceptible. Body is a bit thinner than I’d have guessed, but it’s a tasty quaff anyway.

Very dark black colored brew. Strong aroma of coffee, espresso-beans, roasted malty goodness :) Flavor is very well balanced if you let it rest for a while. Smooth coffee flavor with some chocolates and other roasted malts. A bit creamy even. Very good warming mouthfeel. Very nice.

Color is a solid black with good carbonation and a big thick brown head. Aroma is a deep rich roasted scent with back tone of coco. Taste is big and roasted. Starting with a full body it goes down smooth with a rich feel. Finish comes in sweet with deep roasted flavors and hints of toffee and chocolate then some coffee that brings up a little bitterness. After taste is dry as the roasted flavor lingers on. This is a very good Imperial Stout with big bold complex flavors.
