Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

bomber (’05 vintage)......pours sloppy and is close to being black. quickly dissipating head and looks to be fairly well carbonated.....aroma is strong on the roasted coffee while being backed up by chocolate.....flavor is consistent with the nose. bitter roast, sweet chocolate, bitter coffee and smokey finish. lively mouthfeel.....only wish that the body was a little more full but this one is pretty nice.

Pours a deep black. Aroma of chocolate and strong coffee. Taste is dominated by coffee at first, then finishes a bit sour. Pretty awesome Imp Stout.

I was surprised to see this on the shelf of Torrence Liquors in Calumet City, but there it was. At $18.99 I thought it’d be a special treat. I could barely make it through the bottle. I love coffee; I drink it constantly. This reminded me nothing of coffee. The nose was faint and weak. Smelled more like chocolate raspberries. Did pour a very nice black with a large brown head. Overall, it was very thick with a syrup texture. It tasted like someone dropped a giant jalapeno pepper in a normal porter. A horrible spice flavor all throughout. I guess it would approximate to an old coffee left out for several monthswith a crap load of red pepper stuck in it. I would never try this again and would actively stay away from it.

Only very slight tinges of light escape the midnight madness that lurks below the creamy white surface. The nose tantalized with smoke, negro mole, firepit, dark chocolate, jealapenos and reminded very much of yummy mexican food. The mouth is velvety smooth with similar characteristics of the nose. The finish is mildly smokey with dark chocolate and smooth as silk. WOW.

This was provided in agreagoius and most generous way from Jim. Poured so dark and heavy. The brown head was huge! Lots of coffee aroma, and smoked malts, The taste, wow, lots of coffee, over powering coffee. I guess the sin is using too much coffee. Great brew.

Black, deep black pour--even held up to the light--still black. Small layer of dense tan head that leaves a nice hot chocolate skim and trails of lace on the glass. Coffee roast, a sweet, soft bourbon like Maker’s Mark, and dark toffee. The yeast character seems really clean--almost lager-like. Insanely chewy roast flavor. So much roast. Frech roasted coffee, on the way to carbon. I can’t think of another stout, imperial or otherwise, that approached the shear volume of roast flavor. Initially, it’s pretty bombastic and overwhelming, but it grows more pleasant as my palate adjusts. Lots of hop bitterness apparent in the finish. Under everything else that’s going on, it’s actually pretty clean. It feels more mouthfilling and substantial as the glass warms. A really different imperial stout. Not particularily nuanced or balanced, but I enjoyed the departure from the usual interpretation of the style. Opened this first in a tasting of imperial stouts, based on it being lowest ABV. Bad ideal. This is not a beer of subtle charm, and I think best served as a show closer.

Nice, a bottle from mreusch, Thanks! Excellent stout. Dark black pour, fizzy dark tan head. Lots of coffee, roasted malt, smoke, and chocolate. Notes of vanilla and caramel. Not much fruit in this stout. Tasty!

660ml bottle: Bottled 08/05. It was with great anticipation that I opened this beer. I was a touch disappointed, as I thought it may fall into my top ten beers. It pours a somewhat thick, inky brown color. There was a good bit of a tan head on it that lingers for awhile. The aroma definitely has coffee in it. A bit of a smokiness to the nose also. The taste is definitely coffee, with some of the smokiness in there also. The taste is somewhat bitter, but there is a hint of sweet chocolate malt hiding in there also. This beer is quite good, but I don’t quite agree with some of the very high ratings. Thanks to pineypower for this one.
