Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

660ml bottle: Bottled 08/05. It was with great anticipation that I opened this beer. I was a touch disappointed, as I thought it may fall into my top ten beers. It pours a somewhat thick, inky brown color. There was a good bit of a tan head on it that lingers for awhile. The aroma definitely has coffee in it. A bit of a smokiness to the nose also. The taste is definitely coffee, with some of the smokiness in there also. The taste is somewhat bitter, but there is a hint of sweet chocolate malt hiding in there also. This beer is quite good, but I don’t quite agree with some of the very high ratings. Thanks to pineypower for this one.

On nitro tap at Dieu du Ciel. Pours a deep black with ruby highlights and a remarkably thick and dense tan to deep brown head. Aromas are sweet and full of roasted malt and coffee, with more notes of candy, and caramel, but a little sweeter than caramel, and without the touch of vanilla. Medium bodied (even with the nitro which usually thins things out), and sweet, a little like a milkshake. Finishes with a nice roast bitterness, and a little more sweetness. Hides its abv pretty well.

Thanks Secret Santa! Very coffee forward aroma, so much so that I cannot pick up anything else. Not that I’m complaining. Nearly black and a sandy medium dense head with good lacing. Again, coffee everywhere. Everywhere. I’d like to see how much caffeine is in this bottle. Very tasty essence of espresso and a welcomed balance of creamy viscosity though it’s not complex or all that different, just damn good for what it is.

Thanks to goldtwins for this one. Crazy rich pour with a 6" head. Dusty cocoa, coffee and alcohol aroma. Big body, strong coffee flavor. Great bitter finish. Alcohol flavor is muted. Relatively dry finish. Very good.

Bottle... Poured black with a thick, light brown head. Aroma of earthy, roasted malts, coffee, liqueur, and a musty tone. Lots of coffee in this, a bit acidic because of it. A sweet, Irish cream-like flavor complemented the bitter, dark and boozy flavors.

Traded bottle. Pours oil black with a medium brown head. Huge aroma of burt malt, dry ground coffee and a little chocolate. Creamy mouthfeel with flavours of super bitter coffee, baking chocolate and some smoke. Good but maybe a little heavy on the coffee bitterness for my tastes.

Black with a big bubbly tan head. Aroma is very smokey along with the roasted coffee. Flavor of heavily sweetened strong coffee and smoke.

This is nearly a perfect beer, as though you couldn’t tell just from my rating alone. Had this one tonight at Spuyten Duyvil in Brooklyn. GREAT!!! Perfect coffee aroma, and even the flavor is just like drinking a sweet and creamy cup of Joe. The alcohol is well-masked and I wouldn’t even gues it was 9.5% except that this brew is so heavy! Don’t drink after dinner, you’d never finish the 12 oz. Thick, creamy, rich, sweet and delightful. Must love coffee.
