Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

22oz bottle. Dark black color with a thick tan head. Odd aroma of bitter coffee and dark smoked malt. Kind of reminded me of an ashtray. Flavor was much better than the aroma. Coffee is the dominant flavor along with dark roasted malts. Dry, bitter finish. Update: 10/24/05 Had the tap version at Spuyten Duyvil and was as disappointed as I was by the bottled version. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good beer, but just didn’t knock my socks off. The tap version didn’t have that ashtray taste as bad, but was still very one dimensional and bitter.

12oz bottle during the Super Bowl. Pours black with a medium tan head. Coffee nose with some creamy vanilla and chocolate character. Malty and creamy sweet up front, with a huge coffee finish. Should not have started off with this one because I have a feeling nothing is going to top it.

Thanks to ClarkVV for this one in one our many trades. Pours very very dark with huge head that is lovely rich tan in color. Do I have to say that it smells strongly of coffee??? Well it does and there is some Dark Chocolate and something resembling burnt toffee but the main note is coffee for sure. The taste was a little disappointing as I was hoping for the flavors to easier to distinguiish but it was mostly like a burnt coffee product. This was the first batch and I will re-rate after I enjoy the second bottling.

Yep, this is coffee beer alright. Deep dark pour with bubbly dark tan head. Hit the spot when I was fading last night. Best word to describe it is bitter. Bitter in a good way. Coffee grounds and intense dark chocolate on the nose and on the palate. Somehow still a bit sweet, hitting more on the back of the palate. Almost a burnt brown sugar/syrup aftertaste. A little good must, too.

Had this again this year, and here: Aroma of chocolate chips, coffee beans that have been soaking in water. Blackish brown with ruby highlights and dark tan head. Tastes like whipped cream, black coffee, heavy roasted malts, chocolate chip cookies, Starbucks double shot, and finishes like bittersweet baking chocolate.

Bottle: Dark, opaque black with a large, creamy, thick & lasting light brown head. Just after cracking open the bottle, it foamed up and out on my counter and socks (3rd time this has happened recently, god damn it). Seems to be slightly overcarbonated, but definitely not infected. Aroma is dominated by coffee and mocha. There are some subtle roasted coffee, earth, roasted malt scents, and barely discernable in the background are notes of vanilla and cream. Full bodied & creamy, with a medium amount of carbonation (surprising considering the foaming out of the bottle) in the mouthfeel. Taste is mostly coffee, mocha, and roasted malts with some notes in the background of alcohol, mild vanilla, mild pepper, mild nutmeg, freshly cut wood, and mild grassy hops. Finishes with some surprising notes of light bourbon and coffee. This beer is delicious and would make an amazing desert beer, but it’s also totally dominated by the coffee/mocha combo. Definitely somewhat over-rated. Very nice, would love to try on tap, where I think for once nitro would really fit this one.

A black colored beer, with a beige/brown head. The aroma of coffee, fruits like prunes with bitterness. The taste of soft fruits moving over to coffee. It’s dry with bitter chocolate. The aftertaste of bitter coffee with chocolate.

11.5oz bottle. Big coffee aroma. Opaque black with a patchy, soapy head. Super smooth on the palate, with a considerable coffee finish. The sweet malty alcohol is exceptionally balanced with the chocolaty coffee tastes. Really comes off smooth, mellow carbonation and silky malt profile. I thought Redhooks Double Black was the definitive Coffee Stout but this one really makes a case for itself. Maybe not quite as rich Coffee-wise as the DB Excellent stuff, highly recommended.
