Creamy high light brown lasting head leaving nice curtains. Body blacker than pitch black. No light allowed through here. Coffee aroma it is indeed. Flavor not surprisingly also coffee with a mild and smooth mouthfeel, fair amount of hops bitterness lwo carbonation and a long aftertaste. 9.5% alcohol very well hidden. Man its good. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thin light tan head. Aroma of strong black coffee with background tastes of chocolate, vanilla, and some flowery hops. Taste is mostly of coffee, brown sugar, and some molasses. Texture is thick, full bodied with a slight metalic feel. Finish is slightly dry with a smokey coffee aftertaste. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 3, 2005 Big thaks to Jimmack04. Poured a dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma surprised me. Tons of roastiness. Mostly burnt tobacco, almost like a full ash tray and a good amount of dark roast coffee. Flavor was more tame. Roasted and sweet with a good amount of coffee. Medium bodied, oily and warming. I like the taste more than the aroma on this one. Ughsmash (4076), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 22, 2005 Bottled 11/04. Beautiful black pour with a nice 1/2" well-retained creamy caramel head. Intricate lacing as this went down. I loved the power of the fresh coffee in the nose. Vanilla, and espresso were also prominent in the roasty aroma. Creamy, clean, and very smooth on the palate... almost too smooth. Medium-bodied. Flavor was a wonderful coffee-fest (and they used the good grind). I was feeling juiced after about a third of this. Vanilla and caramel were also present, but to a lesser extent. I found a little oak and alcohol warmth alongside the coffee on the finish. This was not the most complex brew on the market, but it was extremely well-crafted, and a true pleasure to drink... if you like coffee. Sammy (4056), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 21, 2006 Dark coffee, coffee aroma with some booziness and tiny head. Bottle from Dr. Jay via Sam’s in Chicago. Smooth and medium mouthfeel, tasty, some richness. A bit overrated. A speeedway stout caffeine and alcohol melange. A bit of lace on way down. Understated carbonation. 2005 bottled. HogTownHarry (4025), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 22, 2006 Updated: Jul 13, 2006Bottle (660ml - bottled 08 of 2005). Shared with Sammy and DrJay, DrJay’s bottle. Big, BIG thank you to DrJay for sharing this long-sought-after beer with me. Poured thick black, oily, with a minimal brownish head. Aroma really appealed to me somehow, spoke to an older part of my brain: deep roasted coffee & coffee grounds, plums and prunes, alcohol - really liked it. Flavour was a little disappointing - fruitier than I expected, less roastiness, not as hoppy - I even got an odd sweet root beer character from it, as well as a hint of molasses and raisin ... somewhat thin and flat mouthfeel, acidic - still decently complex, just not kick-ass. Overall I’d like a bit more body, and I’m sure aging it a year or two would improve it. Recommended nonetheless. Thanks again, Jay! ** re-rated July 12, 2006 (original rating 9/4/7/4/15=3.9) - I’ve bumped it based on a second tasting, same bottling date - the taste seemed firmer and I enjoyed it more - still overly sweet, but it was definitely a 4+ this time. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 5, 2005 22 oz bottle dated Nov 2004. Thanks to Drunk as a Skunk for sharing it with me. Eclipse black color. Large foamy tan head. Aroma is roasting coffee, coffee beans and vanilla. A full bodied Imperial Stout. Malts are roasted barley, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and coffee beans. Smooth flavor. Lots of coffee flavors. Hints of cheery and vanilla. Mostly coffee. Very good beer, but way too one-dimensional towards the coffee. Hides the 9.5% alcohol very well. Smooth and silky taste. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and coffee beans.
